From the Richard Thompson Group on FB:

I had really difficult personal relations with Sinéad O'Connor. I know she had mental health issues – but it was above and beyond. People asked, “Are you going to sing at the tribute show?” Sorry, sometimes people’s personality gets in the way of their art – and I just can’t go there» – Richard Thompson, 2024

Supposedly from an interview in Q Magazine?

There's something in Mojo.

I found a little snippet on Google, but I can't read the whole article.

That and the Shane comments (about the Pogues supporting him) were the first things I'd read Richard saying that showed an 'edge' I've literally never seen in print before.  I was just really disappointed to read them, but then quite a bit about RT (see tickets, price of) disappoints me these days...

Thanks. Wow, OK. His experience is his experience, and it's not for me, or anyone, to say if he's right or wrong here.

I was at that concert where the (virtually unknown at the time) Pogues supported RT. Shane MacGowan was vile and his language was disgusting. At the end of their set he said they had to go because Richard Thompson was on next and he then said, “Whoever the f..k he is.” I was with a female friend of the family amongst others and I was angry and very embarrassed, and so were all the people around me. He was obnoxious and it was just unnecessary. Therefore I not only agree with RT if he has made critical comments about Shane, I applaud him.

Someone politely declines to play a tribute show to someone they didn’t really get on with, and you think that's edgy? Wait until you hear what Noel Gallagher thinks about his brother…

That's not really what I said.  Saying something someone says "has an edge" to it, and something is "edgy" have entirely different connotations. I still don't think it's a nice interview though...the polite thing to do would have been to stay schtum on the matter (don't speak ill of the dead - or of the mentally ill - is a fairly commonly head view) and not give them anything to write about.  So, no, he wasn't being polite - and as I say I truly think that's the first comments I've read of RT speaking like that, hence the disappointment.

Georgia Lucas has posted a rather lovely short video of Cropredy on youtube. Plenty of links to it on Facebook, too.

I honestly misread that as 'George Lucas'  Grin I wonder how many times that's happened to her over the years!

It's not the first time he's so direct about this subject, especially abuse of alcohol and drugs, maybe the first time RT is so outspoken and naming names.
On face value he contradicts his own "God Loves A Drunk", but I fear that although what he said might be a direct quote, it might have been imbedded in a more nuanced statement.
In this case we get a few quotes, not a real interview or an article, and as such it misses context.
I agree with "dont speak ill of the dead", but not so much with the earlier slagging off the "vulnerable". That's condescending towards Shane MacGowan, Sinéad O'Connor and ultimately Richard Thompson

Don't forget, this is a guy who claims - with a totally straight face - that "Here Comes Geordie" isn't about Sting.   Grin
And let's not get started on "Madonna's Wedding", "I Agree with Pat Metheny" or "Put it There, Pal"!
