Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty at The Glasshouse. Brilliant, musically, showcasing his new album, Mahashmashana and some more classic numbers, too….Sadly,it was too loud, for me, in such a small venue (Sage One)  to the point that I could barely hear!

That said, a packed venue and many people were clearly having the best time, especially those in the ‘mosh pit’ with whom he engaged through eye contact and gestures…whereas he admitted ( in the encore) his preference not to do a repetitive spiel, a few words would have been welcome here and there to engage the rest of the crowd, but the music did the talking for most.

When he did a few songs more acoustically, it was a dream come true to hear his voice live. I shall listen to my LPs again, to hear the beautiful songs properly.

The support act, Loren Kramar, was brilliant…just him and a guitarist, quite a unique stage presence and a most beautiful voice.

The wonderful Stevie Wonder at Lytham Festival. Totally joyous and a tremendous backing band. Few people can match him for the quality of his back catalogue and we got loads of great songs, including two Sly Stone songs in tribute. Corinne Bailey Rae was a very good support act. Now for Simple Minds and Texas on Sunday.

Duran Duran, Exeter. I honestly think that they are in my top 3 live acts of all time (REM are unlikely to ever be dethroned). Amazing setlist, combining all the big hits and a couple of very deep cuts (track from Red Carpet Massacre, anyone?). Le Bon’s voice was incredible, and as I’ve said before, John Taylor is a seriously good bass player. I left feeling euphoric, grateful for having shared the night with my wife and daughter, and the fun friendly people around us. That’s how it should be.

Lytham Festival has had a mixed year with Kings of Leon cancelling through injury and then high winds causing another night to be cancelled. (High winds off the Irish Sea, whatever next?) Th final night more than made up for it though. Enjoyed Cast who I didn’t previously know whilst Simple Minds put on a great show. When they were good they were very good indeed. Perhaps some of the lesser known tracks got a bit samey, but am glad I have seen them at last.

I might be being a little down on them because they were preceded by Texas who were sensational. Didn’t expect that - I recognised far more of their hits than I had remembered and Sharleen Spiteri was sensational. Engaged brilliantly with the audience, funny, and a great voice. I would hurry back to see them.

Home Service at The Ropetackle in Shoreham on Saturday night. I had been struggling all day with various aches and pains and their knock on effect on my mood. I had to force myself to go to the gig. I could easily not have done. All of this melted away early during the first set. They were quite magnificent.

I did think Bob Fox was struggling slightly vocally early on. Nothing major. It just sounded as though his voice needed a few days off but it improved quickly as his vocal cords warmed up to the point where The Old Man's Song about half way through the first set was unbearably moving. Look Up, Snow Falls, Scarecrow, Peatbog Soldiers, Alright Jack all absolutely fantastic and proof positive of the restorative qualities of great music.

No Michael Gregory on drums though. Not sure why as he was on the recent live album.

Yes, he was on first. They changed the running order so I didn’t see him. It’s why I caught half of the set by Cast.

Sadly, one of the (several) flaws of the Festival is that they don’t allow chairs so I don’t go for the full day. Feet still hurting 24 hours on.

Friends went to see ELO at Manchester Co-op last night. Having paid the extortionate food prices, they were in their seats at 8.15 when it was announced that Jeff Lynne was ill and the concert was cancelled. Needless to say they - and many others- were not impressed.

Paul Zervas and Kathryn Pepper doing their Joni Mitchell tribute show at Lancaster Grand. Kathryn has certainly nailed Joni's voice and their backing band were all very good. I'm not the biggest JM fan but knew a fair few of the songs, especially those from the early albums.

The encore was the inevitable Big Yellow Taxi followed by a lovely rendition of River. The final song was Both Sides Now which I must admit made me a bit tearful what with is being the 5th anniversary of our Jude's passing tomorrow.

I don't go to see many tribute acts but this was excellent. They've got a few more dates coming up this month and are playing at Shrewsbury Folk Fest on the Friday and Saturday.

Their own (non-tribute) work is also well worth checking out.

Fantastic day in Hyde Park, if more than a little exhausting. Van Morrison in fine voice and cheerful to boot. Wonderful start with Into the Mystic, followed by several from his (very good) new album. Not many of the “hits” but a few rare tracks like a lovely Lord, If I Needed Someone. Very surprised at the closer - Summertime in England, which I have never heard him do live before. Great version of Gloria as the encore.

By contrast, Cat Stevens included a lot of crowd pleasers - Wild World, Father and Son, First Cut and Where Do The Children Play to name a few. Other than his brief Cropredy appearance, I had not seen him before. Also in good voice and came across as a delightful man.

And then to Neil Young. A storming set, he seems energised by his new band. As he sang, rock and roll will never die, and it won’t as long as he performs like this. I had seen the set list from Glastonbury and he made several changes, starting with a very surprising Ambulance Blues, followed by a brilliant Cowgirl in the Sand. A lovely Goldrush, finishing with Old Man before a couple of very raucous encores, ending on Rocking in the Free World. Plenty of enthusiastic workouts - Hey Hey My My, Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man, Love to Burn. I had worried based on recent albums that he was running out of steam, but on this evidence there is a lot left in the tank. Long May He Run. ( No he didn’t play that, it’s just that I have been listening to Decade!)

Naomi Bedford’s Campfire Festival.
An annual one evening festival hosted by Naomi Bedford & Paul Simmonds (Men They Couldn’t Hang)
A couple of hundred people gathered in a beautiful wooded glade. Paul Simmonds performed songs from the MTCH canon which rarely get an airing by the full band ably assisted by fellow band member Bobby  Valentino on fiddle.
Naomi Bedfords Ramshackle Band, also including Paul Simmonds, ended the proceedings.
There were also less formal sessions around a large campfire.
Jugglers and tightrope walkers added to the general atmosphere.
All in all, just a beautiful evening in wonderful weather.

Last night, The Psychedelic Furs and The Chameleons, at ACL Live!

The Furs were fantastic, thanks to all who encouraged me to attend. Poor Richard Butler tripped over a guitar cord as he bounded onto the stage, fell on his face, rolled, bounced up and said "What an entrance!"

I was unfamiliar with The Chameleons, who remind me of early U2 (in a good way). Very charismatic and the crowd was with them all the way.

Here's a photo from the end of the Furs set. Notice that the floor seats were removed so the crowd could move. It creates a great, communal vibe that I haven't experienced in a long time. It was exhilirating.

Phil Odgers and Bobby Valentino from the Men They Couldn't Hang last night - 2 sets and the second set was the whole of TMTCH first album, as it's 40 years old this year. Some of the songs Bobby had never played before, but he's a really great fiddler. Funny thing happened, 2 lads were at the gig expecting to see an American rapper also called Bobby Valentino - initially they we're a bit confused but stayed and chatted with Bobby afterwards.

Sunday, July 20 - The Surf City All Stars, featuring Al Jardine and David Marks, at the Riviera Theater in North Tonowanda, New York (suburban Buffalo). This group features players from the Beach Boys' 1970s through 2000s live bands, augmented of course by Al and David. It was surprisingly loose, coming across more like a garage band than a group of seasoned professionals. I think the rhythm section was probably the weak part. Poor Al sang the same verse twice on Sloop John B, and otherwise appeared to forget some of the words of songs he's sung a thousand times. We enjoyed it but it was hardly a polished performance.

Wednesday, July 23 - The Swell Season (Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova), at the Kodak Center in Rochester, New York. In contrast to their show last summer in Washington, they stripped the band down to bass and drums, leaving Glen and Marketa to do all the melodic work on guitar and piano. This had the pleasant effect of enhancing their amazing vocal harmonies. We had second-row seats, which made the experience very intimate and moving. Love love love. We're going to see them again in September here in Austin, but I will forever treasure the experience of having seen them up close.

July 31, 2025, Weird Al Yankovic with opener Puddles Pity Party, Bass Concert Hall!

Al covered all the bases, with frequent costume changes accompanied by lengthy and hysterically funny video interludes. He inserted himself into various movies and celebrity interviews, with great effect. He played all the hits - "Smells Like Nirvana," "Fat," "Eat It," "Ricky," "My Bologna," "Amish Paradise," and the Star Wars medley. He's a uniquely talented entertainer.

PPP is less known, I think. He performs in full clown makeup, singing various cover songs quite competently in an operatic style, with prerecorded backing. He did a very credible version of "Crazy Train" in tribute to Ozzy, and closed with his signature tune, the "Gilligan's Island" theme set to the rhythm and chord progression of "Stairway to Heaven." Delightful.

Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Gregg Rolie, with Madam Radar, at the Austin PBS Event Center Sunday!

Gregg was the featured guest at a fundraiser for local music charities and public television. The show started with Gregg being interviewed by his son. He told the story of how he left Santana and founded Journey. In short, he and Carlos Santana got seriously crossways, with Santana boycotting some live gigs. They ended up wrestling in a swimming pool at one point. During one of Carlos' missed gigs, Rolie and Santana's second guitarist, Neal Schon, played New York with no Latin percussionists and were extremely well-received and witnessed by Journey's future manager. That apparently led to the formation of Journey. (He said Santana still calls him from time to time to suggest joint projects. Gregg wonders, "Don't you remember that time I tried to drown you?")

He also talked about Woodstock. He said they flew in on a Korean-War-era helicopter, and that the huge crowd looked like ants from the air. From the stage, they still couldn't see everyone, so they had no idea how big the audience was and didn't experience stage fright. It only dawned on them that they were playing to 500,000 when they had to leave by car and slowly make their way through throngs of people.

Finally, he discussed joining Ringo's All-Starr Band. He hesitated when approached, because "I don't want to play Yellow Submarine," and he prefers to play his own songs, in his own style. He was pleased to find Ringo generous and receptive to the addition of Hammond B3 organ to an unnamed Beatles song. He said Ringo has emerged "on the other side" of fame and fortune, and is incredibly down-to-earth and genuine.

After a set by local band Madam Radar, Gregg came back to play "Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways" (in the style of Jimmy Reed, he said), and a terrific Journey song from Evolution, "Just the Same Way." Fun times!

Just having a look on setlist.fm and it looks like RT did pretty much an identical set at Wickham as he did last month at the Warwick Folk Festival. But he changed things a bit at Sidmouth - he was joined by John Kirkpatrick for the encore which included the Morris On Medley.
