We saw the Young'uns last night at Pontardawe Arts Centre and they were very good.

Thoroughly recommended - they're on their 20th anniversary / 40th birthday tour this year - go and see them!

I videoed a couple of songs but FB simply mutes them if I put them up.

So I've uploaded them to my seldom-used YouTube channel.

Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall, last night at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin!

She played Queen Jane Approximately by His Bobness, but otherwise stuck with jazz and the American Songbook. She is an accomplished pianist, and was accompanied by a bassist (stand-up and electric) and very jazzy drummer. She sings quietly and breathily, reminiscent of Julie London. She hasn't aged a day since she started recording over 30 years ago. A fine evening for all.

A group of us saw Astrid Williamson , largely because we are close friends with her sister , at Wrecking Ball in Hull
Astrid was struggling with a sore throat , so no chat between numbers
Very atmospheric , the Shetland Suite particularly ,  but when she delved into her Goya Dress material musically she distantly reminded me of Nico (not vocally) with hints of the harmonium in her keyboard playing...but then both used to work with John Cale

Steeleye Span last night, at the Riverfront, Newport. I know the audience for a concert of this kind is likely to be from the older population, but I was a bit put out when, after getting to the venue, there was a sign pointing to the Newport Dementia Support Group!

Anyway, Steeleye were on formidable form, with songs old and new, including about half a dozen from their new album 'Conflict'. One was an acapella reworking of 'Dogs and Ferrets', from the 50 year old 'Commoner's Crown' album. I have since heard the album version, having purchased it after the show, and I think it holds up well next to the original. Of course they encored with what Maddy called 'That Song!' Even though I am not its biggest fan, I joined in the chorus along with everyone else!

The current line up is still blazing a trail with both trad and new songs and I, for one, hope they continue to do so. A great evening - and I can't wait to see them again.

Tom Jones last night at ACL Live in Austin, Texas!

He observed that Willie Nelson is still touring at 92, so he has no plans of retiring at the relatively young age of 84.99. His voice remains a powerful instrument, and he has a charming stage presence. Best of all, he has impeccable taste in songs. Long may he wave.

Last Friday, Steven Wilson at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. The first half was a complete performance of his new album, The Overview, and it was very good indeed. Analogue synths had broken down so the setlist was changed and it was very much geared towards the 'proggy' end of his back catalogue. (The first time I saw him was with with Porcupine Tree in 1995 in a pub not far from the Symphony Hall, which I'm not even sure still exists as the whole area has been built up!

Last night was Steeleye Span in Leamington - a last minute purchase a few hours before the gig. The last time I was them was on the Wintersmith tour. A fine performance, with quite a few tracks from the new album in the setlist.

That's when I first saw them as well - at the Penny Theatre in Canterbury - must have been about 50 there.  I only went because of Barbieri.

Went to see Gregory Porter last Sunday at the Glasgow Armadillo (excellent gig , great band).  Only mention it as we almost managed to see Torvill and Desn as well.

For those not familiar there are several venues within walking distance in Glasgow - the Hydro, the Armadillo snd the original SEC conference centre.  As we were in a bit of a rush we hadn't checked which venue it was and because the other half has the typeface on her phone quite large the Ticketmaster app only showed SEC - so we did the sensible thing and asked the first security chap where we should be going....

Just over there sir- pointing to nearest queue - where we are duly searched and scanned and allowed entry to the Hydro.  Checking the App we head for the correct door via the bar ( naturally ).
Slightly concerned to hear a message over the tannoy that the show was about to start we head for seats to discover that we're in the wrong place.

There follows a polite interrogation from the security supervisor trying to figure out how we got in there and then trying to work out if we could get in to the other venue when our tickets had been scanned ( the various readers are all on the same system)

So we finish our drinks - listening to the start of the show then toddle over the way to the Armadillo where we enter with no problems find the bar again and enjoy the show.

However does it inspire confidence in the various security arrangements if unticketed people can easily gain entry? Noone challenged us until we were about to take a seat.

Also what use is it having a ticket on an App that doesn't show the venue?   Granted the missus had changed the settings on her phone to mske the text big but surely that should be workable?  In days of yore when we had paper tickets all the info was right in front of you and likely a different colour from the next nearest gig.

I must be getting old.

Hope everyone enjoyed Torvill and Dean as well...

When I saw him it was because I'd bought a few albums mail order and liked them. I had no idea that there was an ex member of Japan in the lineup.
Since then I've bought a few of his excellent solo albums.

Red Rum Club this evening at (appropriately) Aintree Racecourse. What a great live band they are - I think they'd go down a treat at Cropredy!
