RIP Beaky
Only one of them left now I met Beaky in 2009 at his club The Gig in Benavista in Spain where my brother-in-law was living. He was a great host, chatted to everyone and sang “With A Girl Like You” (The Troggs song, not the Rutles) for me. RIP Beaky Somewhere secreted away I've got their autographs from when they were Dave Dee and the Bostons! |

She was a Swansea legend, would arrive with no fuss at her local pub and sing all evening with the locals.
She'll be especially mourned in South Wales.

My only experience of her in the flesh was at the Vetch when she was introduced pitchside at half time 30 odd years ago. The reception was 'mixed' but she seemed to take it all in good humour. I recall her miming (presumably) along to a few of her hits but I might be wrong...the 90s were a bit hazy at times.

She really does appear to have been genuinely liked as a person. Incidentally, it's hard to believe that 1996 was 30 years ago. I moved to Wales from Bicester in '95. Time stands still for no-one.

one of my favourites in the 70's but he was only in a very early incarnation. Saw one particularly stunning gig where they were called back at least seven times. Only ever seen The Pretenders match that. |

I think I stumbled across STD because of the VdG(G) connection. I've got a couple of their early albums on cassette (really nice copies) and I picked one out (Machine that Cried, I have a feeling JC may have already left by then?) last year and gave it a spin - great stuff.

Sad to hear of his passing Yes they were a good band- I bought the CD reissue of the Machine That Cried. I always liked them but it was a long time before I caught up with them . Couldn't buy a lot of albums back in those days 🙂 |

They only got rocky after he left.. Try Chris Adams solo stuff particularly The Damage. |

String Driven Thing were either the first or second band I ever saw.
There were two gigs put on at my school in 1973, the other was Tír na nÓg and I can never remember which came first!

I remember hearing The Bay City Rollers version and grudgingly thinking it wasn't bad. Not a patch on the original, though. I think I first heard the SDT version on a trailer album from Charisma. If my memory serves me right, the album also had VDGG's 'Theme One'. |
