I totally agree. Music to loose yourself in. R.I.P Toumani. Thank you. I loved how he alternated between the traditional and exploration like with the Symmetric Orchestra. I remember Michael Palin’s interview with him, and Toumani mentioned when he was younger he listened to James Brown, Otis Redding, etc…which he absorbed along with the griot traditions. In The Heart Of The Moon with Ali Farka Toure is one of my top 10 albums…no exaggeration |

Funnily enough, I had to do the CD shelf shuffle to accommodate a Deep Purple album earlier today and looked at both albums for a while. Thanks for mentioning the Palin interview, I have his travels series on DVD and remember the interview in Sahara, but that was before I got into Toumani's music and I didn't realise it was him. I'll dig that out and give it a watch. I also wasn't aware that he worked with Danny Thompson, I'll have to check those out. |

We got to see the Asymmetric Orchestra in Somerville MA a few years back. Wonderful music as well as a lesson in the instruments in use. He seemed to enjoy bringing Africa to us.

Also well worth listening to are Kulanjan, the album he recorded with Taj Mahal, and especially Afrocubism, a wonderful blend of Cuban and African music. One of the best sets I ever saw at WOMAD.

I saw him a couple of times, once with Peter Green supporting. Two blues legends but very different characters. Green was a bit subdued (perhaps unsurprising considering his years in the wilderness) whereas Mayall was leaping about like a man half his age. |

We finally saw John Mayall about ten years ago at the tiny One World Theater in Austin. We had an autograph and a brief chat. Instead of selling his own CD, he was pushing his band mates’ records. Awesome fellow. RIP

Just found out that Bebe , murdered in Southport, was the granddaughter of Michael Weston King! And his father passed away too this week. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this terrible time.
