A lot of Linda Ronstadt and Suzanne Vega.

I'm still not sure that I understand the Linda Ronstadt phenomenon. Great voice but largely meat and potatoes cover versions of mostly very well known hits by other people. Just why was she so huge in the US? Her version of Randy Newman's Sail Away is hugely ill advised. The sweetness and lack of irony in her voice singing those lyrics is massively jarring. Having said all that, I do still find her an easy listen.

With Suzanne Vega I am revisiting some of the albums that I have not played so often down the years, Songs In Red & Gray, Beauty & Crime and Lover Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers.

I'm with you on Linda Ronstadt. I bought 4 of her early albums when there was a cheap offer on Amazon years back, but they never really grabbed me.

Suzanne Vega, on the other hand...

Suzanne's latest album is up there with her very best.

I reckon if you look at a lot of photos of her taken in the 60s and 70s you can probably work out at least a partial answer....

Well yes, she was certainly easy on the eye.

I have now moved on belatedly to Sly & The Family Stone's Greatest Hits (and in the car a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys marathon). Perfect sitting in the garden in the sunshine music.

I think she was very much a product of her time - the mid seventies - when working out of California, constant touring, and a record company mogul who had taken to you and was determined to make you a star, very much paid off in spades.

Two new purchases:

After The Fire: Bright Lights 1974-1983 - a collection of all their albums, plus a bunch of demos and a few live tracks

Sam Kelly: Dreamers Dawn. His first album for four years.

Quite different, but both excellent.

Now moving onto Bad Company in memory of Mick Ralphs.

The new album by Eilidh Shaw and Ross Martin titled Stay Here All Night.

I'd actually sent off for a cd copy of their last album but it never turned up. I then got an email from Eilidh asking if I'd received it as she couldn't remember posting it to me. Turned out she's been stressed out doing visa-related paperwork and forgot about my order.

Anyway, she offered me downloads of the old album and the new release so I went for their new one and very good it is too. The only slightly annoying thing is that I'm only getting the name of the tracks showing in File Explorer and when I go into Windows Properties it isn't letting me add in any other details like artist and album name. Anyone know how I get round that?

It's ok, I've sorted it. I converted the files from wav to mp3 and Windows is now letting me edit the properties. Never a dull moment with Windows!

The Eighteenth Day of May - Self-titled

20 years since this, along with Espers and (slightly later) The Owl Service and Sproatly Smith, got me into listening to (and searching for) new music again, having more or less ignored/disdained it for more than a decade

One good thing about the internet is that it makes deep dives into music possible  Cheesy

Neil Young at Glastonbury on the  old steam radio yesyerday evening.

Quite enjoyable. But the crowd singing  along  with 'The Needle and the Damage Done' was incongruous at least.

But it did help cover for Neil's inability to sing it. Lowlight of an otherwise enjoyable set.

Yes he struggles to hold a tune sometimes.

I looked forward to it but somehow I found the grungy guitar work a bit tedious and something was missing for me. But clearly he's going to burn out rather than fade away and didn't just serve up a saccarine set of crowd pleasers. Crowd seemed a bit muted, perhaps not the best choice for main Saturday headliner.

Dipped in and out to Glasonbury and fairly underwhelmed by what I heard. But tuned into Sunday headliner, Olivia Rodrigo and really a breath of fresh air. Great energy, great band and just fine pop/rock songs. Crowd mostly young females, sang along to every word and clearly had a ball. I was impressed.

It was a shame that the Beeb didn't seem to be showing anything from the smaller stages. Apart from catching the odd song by the likes of Pulp and Supergrass, the band I enjoyed the most was Black Uhuru. They certainly spanned the generations with an impressive young drummer while one of the singers and the keyboard player looked like they could have been in the band from the start. According to Wikipedia singer Derrick "Duckie" Simpson has been the only constant member of the band.
