Recent gigs

Lovely gig by Lindisfarne at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh. Good mixture of the hits and early album tracks (Scarecrow Ong, Passing Ghosts, Ciity Song), with a few rare Alan Hull Songs (Squire). Fun that Train in D Major has now become Train in E Major because of the passing of the years.

All in all, great fun as usual. It always seems like catching up with old friends and you leave feeling better than when you went in. (Excellent new bass player, didn’t catch his name.)

Hadn't realised that Ian Thomson had left the band. He'd been with them since the mid-Nineties. Good to know the new fellow seems to be settling in, though.

The new bass player was at NFFF. He played avery active part in the otherwise solo rendition of Winters Song.

Purbeck Folk Festival gave us several great gigs. One was the two-man bundle of joyous mayhem that is Ribble.

Then UFQ played much the same setlist as at Croppers but in the more intimate setting of a large barn, which was great.

Additionally The Zawose Queens were a fantastically lively and happy act. They are from Bagamoyo, Tanzania, comprising relatives Pendo and Leah Zawose. Their music incorporates traditional Wagogo styles and electronic production. Well worth a listen.

Just back from Beautiful Days festival.

Quite sublime going back-to-back from Spell Songs to Sex Pistols to Mercury Rev I must say.

Great sets from Penguin Cafe, Julie Fowlis, Elephant Sessions, and Frank Turner. Absolutely blinding set from Justin Adams and Mohamed Errebbaa!

Very hot! Fortunately the site has plenty of spots of shade, and places like the Tiny Tea Tent, the Copse Bar and the Bimble Inn in which to seek respite.

Twenty years since we first went to this festival... Time flies!

This time of year my FB Memories fills up with BDs flashbacks.

Krankenhaus was a joy as always.  And wholly dry.  Perfect weather for me, actually - dry and not too hot.  Tip top.

Best sets I saw (lasted from 9am to c.8-9pm every day so missed Throwing Muses, some of the Sea Power sets, Moonlandingz and Arab Strap) were ex-Easter Island Head (literally jaw droppingly good), Dean Wareham and Sea Power doing a Galaxie 500 set (gulp) - when Dean and Britta did a separate set she sang I'll Keep it With Mine (very much, I thought, in the style of FC), Richard Dawson (one of the best live performers around imho), Sister John (new to me), Stewart Lee (a brief 25 minute rip roarer), an absolutely hilarious conversation with Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris by Shaun Keaveny, likewise, John Robb interviewing Will Sergeant and Paul Simpson was comedy genius, and on the Sunday evening, The Modern Ovens (Jonathan Richman covers band with various Sea Power members etc.), and caught a bit of the Sexual Objects (Fire Engines, Josef K, Orange Juice etc.) before I headed back very contentedly.

Lots of great morning talks too.  And walks around Muncaster Castle.  And Ravenglass.  And, and, and.  Only 1500 people.  It's just exactly perfect.  Sadly, I think they're taking a year off next year.
