Many items of interest to me in the new issue of Mojo that has just plopped through my letter box including, so the front cover trails, Fairport Convention.

You will have to turn to the back page to find the article, an account of how Iain Matthews came to join and then leave tha band, in his own words.

What a coincidence, yesterday I found this interview, do not know if it is the same:

Absolutely seriously, with Judy I would never dream of winding her up. I like her and respect her far too much.

Does Ian in the Mojo interview also tell of the rather tactless/hurtful remark by Ashley Hutchings?

"As it was, Joe (yeah, again) wanted to move on to phase 3 quickly and sentiments had no place in his plan. I was asked to leave and dumped on the same day. Presuming that he meant soon, I got in van to go to the show, Ashley turned to me and said ,"Where do you think you're going." Sandy bless her, turned to him and said, "You heartless bastard." I got out and away they sped."

Interesting in the circumstances that Iain turned up for the Joe Boyd curated "1969" show at the Barbican a few years back. Given his treatment you would think he would have as much or more right to hold a grudge against Mr Boyd than a certain other ex band member who did not turn up.

On the other hand, he got a number 1 record out of it which nobody else in this sorry story can claim.

No there is no mention of anything said by Ashley Hutchings.
Iain seems quite philosophical about it all.

I was rather surprsed when I read what Ashley Hutchings had said and also by the acceptance of the other bandmembers of what (apparently) Joe Boyd had decided for them.

Maybe I am too naive, here I was thinking that there would be a band meeting to decide what direction the band would take and everybody would have a chance to say what he thought about it and  could then decide what he or she would do.

Maybe having a number one hit was a very sweet unexpected revenge.

When teenagers make decisions it seldom works out for someone, I think this is all so far in the past nobody cares anymore apart from those who have not managed to grow up.

Ronsld, if u haven't already, Joe Boyds book White Bicycles, is a really good read on his working relationship with bands in the late 60's.
He ran UFO and was seen as a hippy but he became a businessman out to make a few bob.

That's exactly what happens. You all get together without the party you're considering booting out, and then tell them it was the manager's idea. See also Pete Best, Mick Jones, and my mate Paul.
