Shirley Collins  :  'Hares on the Mountain'/ 'Oakham Poachers'  (Domino Records 7", download included, 2025, limited edition of 300).

One of those items i ordered just for the sake of having it.  It does sound and look good, though.

Is that a different version from this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrQK0Gg4Aw0 ?

Yes, it's a faster version.

That is a fabulous performance, the voice has matured with wonderful depth and emotion. The video is a great accompaniment as well.

Horses for courses, but I massively prefer the slower one.

Another massive slow vote from me although the instrumental arrangement on the fast version is interesting.

Nick Drake : The Making of Five Leaves Left  (Island 4LP,  2025).

Okay it"s worth it.   But heaven knows when I will  get around to hearing it again.  It will sit somewhere, like the Bert Jansch  BBC  box,  until i remember ive got it and find time to play it again.

The holes in the LPs are rather tight on the spindle of my LP 12, but other than that it's hard to fault.  Very good pressings.  And of course it's history.  Nick's  occasional laugh and overall posotiveness remind us he did have some satisfying years,  before serious mental illness took him.

I'm still waiting for my CD box which is winding its way from Germany.  Stupidly expensive but I feel like I need it.

Fairport  Convention  :  Gladys's  Leap   (Talking Elephant   LP,   pale blue  vinyl, 2025).

Seriously now how can this album be 40 years old?  How am I not still 27?   Why did i lose interest in Fairport around that time?

Whatever the answer to the last of these , i welcome this reissue in my favourite format. Sure , around  half of it is meat -and- potatoes folk rock,  but there are at least  2 classics.  One of these  is  'Hiring Fair' and the other isn't.
Richard guests,  and Cathy Le surf .
It"s not great sounding , it's maybe from a digital source,  but the pressing is very clean and you get a nice gatefold.

I was going to ask somebody - it says it has been remixed, but how different does it sound?  Not hugely improved by the sound of it?

I've never heard an original  copy Will,  but it would almpst certainly be analogue.  Reissues on vinyl are not necessarily mastered from analogue. Many are taken  from a digital file.  It might be worth asking  Talking Elephant  what was done.

I spoke too soon. Played discs 1-3 with no problems.  Into side 2 of 5LL  and the stylus jumped. Repeatedly.  Close examination under a naked bulb revealed a tiny but deep scratch running in the direction of the groove. I'm not playing it  on a Crosley, almost needless to ssy.
Back to Rough Trade it goes.

You're about the fourth person I know with a problem with the vinyl.  I've genuinely no idea why anybody buys a modern vinyl pressing of anything.

I just lost my detailed reply here, so here are my reasons in summary. I'm getting deja vu so forgive me if i reiterate what i said last time this topic came up- i'm sure it has.

1.  I have a very good Tt/arm and cartridge . It is older than some of my friends- i mean the people, not their record players.  It gives outstanding results. My CD player,     aso an audiophile  player, can't touch it.

2. Vinyl manufacture is on the whole better than it has been for years.  Pressings are flatter,  quieter and sturdier than the dismal
80s/90s output. I buy vinyl regularly enough, and last time i checked my LP  purchases list from the last year, there were very few disappointments there.

3. You need to do a little homework  regarding each release. Who mastered it and from what. Where was it pressed.  There are forums  where knowledgeable folk discuss these things .

4. Finally, compare prices, and purchase from an outlet with a decent returns policy.  Avoid outlets who don't pack records properly.

The 2 CDs of Strawbs at the BBC. (2010 releases).

Much of this is priceless to a fan. Includes  sessions and concerts  during Rick Wakeman's brief tenure with the band.

Many, many moons ago a boy I fancied asked if I wanted to go to his room to “listen to the Doobies”. Thinking this was a euphemism I readily agreed!

It wasn’t  Sad  and I’ve successfully avoided them ever since, despite being a big Michael McDonald fan.

Until now! I love a Best of… compilation and this one “The Very Best of The Doobies” off iTunes is superb. What a great range they had: yacht rock -> pop -> Motown -> funk -> ballads - it’s all here.

Perfect for a sunny Sunday in the garden  Cool

Only relatively recently i discovered that a 'doobie'  is another word for what us youngsters back in the day called a 'joint'.  Before 'spliff' became fashionable.
