I quite like Iain's version of it. The subtle reworking and change of emphasis makes this still sound fresh. I prefer it to Van's at this point, especially since that one is overplayed!

From the album 'Go for Broke', which I bought way back in 1978. I love this version of the song.

I recall whilst I'd bought "History" and "Rising " probably from the bargain bins around 75/76 , my elder brother had been investing in Eagles , Jackson Browne and Janis Ian ..and "Go For Broke" , great LP , particularly liked "Brown Eyed Girl" .
Met Ian when I went to see him in York touring Pure and Crooked , his more recent stuff still sounds brill , to my ears his age hasn't impacted on his vocal ability one jot

For confirmation of this one only needs to hear the 1967 version of Time Will Show the Wiser back to  back with the storming Cropredy 2017 version.

Free holiday for Mr T and guest with end of holiday gig - no different than folks giving a talk on a cruise ship, or even offering special access to Cropredy for special tour groups. My question is what the heck is the Thommo / African connection?

I have been bemused by this since I first saw it, I however would like to suggest we campaign for the more affordable and afternoon at Chester Zoo as Ralph sing an appropriate selection form Alphabet Zoo.

If you concentrate on the positives , accepting that Swarb , Martin L and Sandy from the 60's line ups are no longer with us , there's a heck of a lot of talent from '67/68 Fairport ,  still writing & performing , which should be celebrated & supported

Dudu indeed

My first Fairport show. I suspect Nick Logan was as unaware of Township Jazz, as were the rest of us at the time, in thinking it Carribbean.

Speaking to Joe Boyd some years ago, he suggested there is unreleased material with RT, SN & maybe DP lurking in the vault, presumably from the Mike Heron "Smiling Men With Bad Reputations" recording, or the "Dudu Phukwana & The Spears" sessions. ( https://www.flatinternational.org/template_volume.php?volume_id=233 )

If anyone should have a copy of the latter, I'd dearly love to hear it.  Smiley

From the album 'Go for Broke', which I bought way back in 1978. I love this version of the song.

Also if you have 5 mins on youtube Mr Matthews does an incredible version of "One Day Without You" on the follow up album "Hit And Run". The song of course is a  John Martyn (another Iain) classic , so for our Iain to dismantle it and reassemble it with a piano based riff instead of JM's guitar, well ,  it's reinvented rather than "covered" in my opinion. I think it's great to find a cover of a song you love and you enjoy both equally.Immense talents at work.

Wouldn't we all?
One song "escaped" on the Fledg'ling compilation "White Bicycles", "Church Mouse" (see below)
There seems to be a bootleg CD of that South-African release around, possibly MP3 sourced, but I haven't seen or heard it

Cheers, I'd not come across that. Looks like one of the outakes not on the original LP. I'll add it to my wants list.  Smiley

"Joe's Jika" of the original Dudu album is included on the 2cd "Next Stop... Soweto Vol. 3 (Giants, Ministers And Makers: Jazz In South Africa 1963-1978)" If you can find a cheap copy it might be worth it, as the song is only 2:42 in length
