Thought forever lost, but now found. The 1975 BBC-TV Babbacombe Lee special with music from Fairport - a combination of '71 & '75 lineups - Martin Carthy etc. Also excerpts from the Australian silent film on the subject, interviews etc.  Smiley

This is the repeat minus Sandy Denny's version of Breakfast In Mayfair, which apparently was audio-only in the original broadcast.

Well that's lovely. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure the first airing did have a visible Sandy on "Breakfast In Mayfair". We may never know for sure unless an original copy turns up in a derelict cinema in Burkino Faso, or somewhere.  Smiley

I've been told that the original broadcast did feature a visible Sandy - singing the track live sat at a table in a hotel. Not that I've ever seen it myself!

Nice!

That must be Fairport, playing 'Abide with me' after the introduction. Never thought iI would ever hear them play that!

This is indeed wonderful. I've been fascinated by the John Lee story via Fairport, but there is so much more here to the story that I was unfamiliar with. Plus as a Fairport (and friends) document it is terrific.

Looking forward to putting some time aside to watch this. A look at the BBC Genome project gives the transmission details and this version is some 15 minutes shorter than the first airing in February which does include Sandy in the credits.

Next on after this was OGWT with Joe Walsh and Camel.  Smiley

Didn't this show up on YouTube a while ago, with some dude asking for cash for DVD copies?

Anyway, glad to see it on Fstix's account in great quality.  I watched it yesterday.  Swarb came over really well.  I miss him.

What a fantastic programme. It really puts the album in context, which I’ll give a spin to tonight. Great to hear Martin Carthy. Does anyone know if the instrumental snippets (at the 16:30 mark) were written especially, or are from somewhere else?

I believe that is the segment of a slightly reworked Sir William Gower Paul mentioned earlier in the thread.

Yes, that and the version of Abide With Me will have been recorded especially for the programme, but neither had to be written (as they already had been !).

Martin Carthy looked great.  He was a handsome bugger.

This is worth a listen - 70s rock band called Mongrel featuring an alternative FC line up of Bob Brady, Roger Hill and Tom Farnell, and at a later date Vo Fletcher:

A rather irrelevent video, nice though it is, accompanying Francoise Hardy's cover of the Beverley Martyn "Stormbringer" song "Ocean" from 1972 featuring RT & DM. The same LP also has a creditable version of Trees "Garden of Jane Delawney"  Smiley

Two versions of the Bryn Haworth song 'Pick Me Up' performed by Fairport live in 1975 with vocals shared by Swarb, Trevor and Peggy - and Sandy on the second version at least. Never officially recorded. Smiley
