Had a quick search to see if there is anything so far on this. My take is, it’s a wonderfully atmospheric show and tell. Beautifully, atmospherically shot - obviously the performances are amazing, and there’s a lovely intentionally sub-Spinal Tap on-bus interview (“One has to either rock, or roll - you can’t do both, you’d put your back out...”) but the main thing is that the director manages to avoid all the cliches created between this year’s BBC Glastonbury coverage and The Last Waltz. Well worth an hour of the time of anyone who still has a DVD player. https://www.richardthompson-music.com/windingroad

I thought it was just ok. Obviously happy to see anything with Richard but I wasn't overwhelmed by anything but the music itself. Speaking of RT and Amazon however, the full 1984 Rockpalast gig is available.

One of the most exciting things in it, for me, anyway, was a few snippets of video of the R&L concert I produced in Baltimore in 1982. I knew there was a single-camera video, which the band took with them when they left, but I had been told that it had been misplaced. And then, lo and behold, there was my show!!! (I could tell by the stage layout, background curtain, camera angle, etc.) Now, of course, I need to see the rest of it somehow...

No. Also, hard ‘T’ in the ‘Th’.

I always favoured 'Thommo' (again with a hard 'P') when getting 'into the whole brevity thing'...!

Thompy is very much Shane's thing.  I've noticed him using it over the years, and always wondered about pronunciation.

Exciting times!

Aaahh...I see, cheers Jules. I wonder if the likes of Mr Thompson ever read these threads and see discussions such as this!! What do you think they make of it all?  Huh

Pretty sure Richard has other things to do, tbh.

When I saw him looking for the right entrance to access Hull City Hall , by himself , I called out "Richard" and he came over to me
So I'm sticking with that
Tried and tested  , worked for me , when it mattered

To be fair it is an affectation, picked up after spending time with the de la Bedoyere family. When I met him in person I called him “Mr. Thompson”.

Is that what Jude et famille called him, then?

And come on, spill the beans - when did you meet him?  Sadly, a quick shake on the hand (with him and Teddy) outside a restaurant in Brecon late 90s is about as exciting as I can stretch to...

Haha! You're probably right although he did used to reply pretty promptly to questions etc on his Beeswing website. I once asked him about his song 'The Poor Boy is Taken Away' and how it's been said to be about Nick Drake and got a fairly quick reply if I recall correctly.

Nottingham Rock City (I think) wherein a short cultivation of relations with Clive Gregson resulted in us being invited backstage after the show. Christine Collister was watching a horror movie on TV, and RT was kind, polite, a little shy (or reserved) and dealt very diplomatically with a gentleman who seemed very insistent that he could service his guitars for him. It wasn't a great meeting of minds to be fair - I was so awestruck I'm not sure which of us stammered the most, but he was a very solicitous host. In the end, in the immortal words of the NotW, we made our excuses and left.
