Is Al Stewart on the bill too? I heard he was playing some concerts with America this year in the US.
I don't know - no opener has been identified yet. I also just found out that America is no longer a duo, as Gerry Beckley retired at the end of 2023. Dewey Bunnell is now the sole founder member. I'm disappointed, but Dewey wrote and sang "Tin Man," "Horse With No Name," "Sandman" and "Ventura Highway," so he's no slouch. He has every legal and moral right to call himself "America." Looking forward to it! |

Can't make tomorrow's (Fri 17th) sold out King Creosote gig in Liverpool (I've had to change things around due to a new consultant's appointment at the Christie) so have a single ticket available at cost price (£30). It's a PDF ticket (for the original venue - it's now at the Tung - a fab venue just up past the Uni which Fairport played at a few months ago). Drop me a line if you or anybody you know can use it.

Off to see Ghosts, Werewolves & Countryfolk: the Songs & Stories Of Sabine Baring-Gould, tomorrow evening in Horbury, where Baring-Gould was a curate. The music is provided by Miranda Sykes & Jim Causley, with John Palmer narrating. Should be a fun night.
They are taking the show to various festivals & venues over the next few months. Jim Causley's website has the full list of dates.

The Baring-Gould evening sounds good - thanks for the hint to go and look at Jim's website. We live very close now to the area where SBG was squarson (his old home was a very fancy hotel/restaurant, which has just gone bust!).

Just got back. Terrific evening. Jim Causley & Miranda Sykes were as excellent as ever, and John Palmer, who shared anecdotes and read some of SBG's stories, did so with a real passion for his subject. I went for the music but left feeling the need to properly explore SBG's work. Job done by the performers! If you get the chance to catch a performance, I hope you enjoy it! |

Martin Graebe has written a very interesting book about SBG and his folk song collecting (which also functions as a general biography), called As I Walked Out. Worth tracking down if you want to learn more about him.
I loved the story about how he met his wife, when he was a curate in Yorkshire. She was a mill-girl, quite a bit younger than him, and far below him in social status (this was the 1860s, so these things mattered). He was determined to marry her, and arranged for her to spend a year or so living with a middle-class family to learn how to function in those circles, whilst he paid her family the equivalent of her wages. They were happily married for about 50 years, and had 15 children, and are buried side by side in the churchyard, and his epitaph for her calls her 'the better half of him'.

Artimus Pyle Band - July 9, The Haute (pronounced "Hot") Spot, Cedar Park.
He was Lynyrd Skynyrd's third drummer, after Rickey Medlocke (early 1970s) and Bob Burns (drummer on "Pronounced" and "Second Helping"). Artimus played on "Nuthin' Fancy," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "One More From the Road" and "Street Survivors." He survived the plane crash in 1977, and joined the band for the Tribute Tour, which I saw at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, August 1988. By his account, he was *drummed* out of the band by Ronnie Van Zant's widow, reuniting only for the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame induction. In a recent interview, he complained that the succession of LS replacement drummers don't play his parts properly. He's not shy.
He expresses pride in the quality of his current band, which plays mostly Skynyrd and some originals. I might check this out, especially because prices are very reasonable.
