It's a long way up from down here

« on: August 31, 2009, 03:33:13 PM »

Earlier today, a board member sought advice from me regarding a problem with IE8. I'm posting my findings here to help anyone else affected.

The problem was, that when editing a long post, the editor box scrolling mechanism jittered up and down with each character typed, hiding recently typed text.

The problem was resolved by setting IE8 to display Talkawhile in Compatibility mode. You can do this by selecting "Compatibility View Settings" from the "Page" menu of IE8, and adding "talkawhile.co.uk" into the list of websites.

(Of course the other advice is to use Firefox instead!)

I've been having that trouble in Vista too, and while I haven't actually tested it, I found the Compatability thingy under the Tools menu.  As I was viewing Talkawhile at the time, it seems to have automatically put the whole of talkawhile.co.uk into compatibility mode.

Will report back if it hasn't fixed it.

There is a bit of a battle going on between Microsoft and a large number of web sites, including some major players.

Microsoft claim that IE8 is causing problems because it is 'too compatible' with HTML, XHTML, CCS etc standards. Almost everybody else disagrees. So there is a bit of a 'well you fix it' stand off.

The best advice is don't use IE8. If you must then add any sites you have problems with to the compatability list.

How on earth can something be "too compatible"... ?

Or do they mean that by exception it's not compatible enough with everything else?
