Barny and the imagined village

Hello Simon

Thanks for answering all these questions its been really nice to have you here. I wanted to know how the cellist Barney Morse-brown got involved in the imagined village, I've seen him around Oxford a fair bit in various incantations but seeing him with you guys is just a really great combination and I just wanted to know how it came about. Also following on I guess from Waterloo wanderers question about an imagined county, do the imagined village plan to stay as is continuing on into the future? Or will new people be joining? If this does happen do you think you would become a kind of musical collective swapping and changing members?

Hi Vikki.

The way I was asked to be part of the Imagined Village happened in a relatively 'organic' way.
I first met Simon at a pub session in Dorset a few years ago. About a year later I became involved in playing music with what is now the Village Band, which includes my Wife, Kate Garrett two other musicians from Dorset, and Simon.
A little while after joining that band, Simon called me about doing a recording session for one of the tracks on the Imagined Village album and one track turned onto a few and was then asked to be part of the touring band. And here I am .

BMB is very modest, he is also now playing in Eliza's band and Chris Wood's band, and I really don't mind at all do I Barney......

Simon what about the musical collective, will you just be getting bigger & bigger until you will need 2 aircraft hangers to practice in or will it be a one in one out system or are you simply going to see how it goes?

I'm sure I've seen Barney play in a dozen or more bands at Truck Festival over the years.

... And there's Duotone too. We enjoyed the gig at Modern Art Oxford the other day Barney

A very warm welcome to you, my dear fellow.  Who would have thought, a few years ago, that a cellist would bring a flock of folkies to its feet in the Bridgwater Hall, Manchester.  But you did.  

It's not the instrument that one associates with jiggery-folkery or World Roots music.  How come its your weapon of choice?  What else do you play?  As a by-the-way, what was the last CD that you bought?

My youngest son (age 12) decided he wants to learn to play the cello and bought one home from school last week.  I haven't heard him practice at all..............yet, but now I know how its done .......
