What a wonderful performance from IV on Later...with the Boogie Woogie Maestro. A great advert for traditional roots music, I thought. What are your memories of it (if any)?  |

Memories:
1: Watching the Young Coppers pissing themselves laughing in 'make up' having their beards 'fluffed' by the stylist.
2: Sharing a good luck pint with the band before we went down to the studio then realising we were stuck locked on set by security for 2 hours as we waited for Liza Minnelli to come down from Bruce Forsyth's 80'th birthday party............and REALLY wanting the loo. In TV speak it's called 'Nervous Bladder'. I looked round and all the Coppers were squirming like school kids trying to cross their legs. We eventually made a mass exodus via one of the back stage fire exits and caused a BBC security alert. The floor mananger was not happy and we heard him mumbling into mic head set "Bloody unprofessional folkies" as we all stood in line singing "Come to the Cabaret" as we let it flow. Great stuff.
3: Running though Cold Hailey Rainy Night at the BBC the day before for the Camera Check without Martin Carthy (who wasn't available), and the whole thing sounding horrible empty and flat. Everyone was totally despondent and you could tell the BBC stage crew were thinking "who the hell are this lot?". I only realised then how incredible important and central his guitar part and personality is to the whole dynamic of the song. On the night the adrenalin kicked in and the band 'played as one' with an amazing focus and energy. We were the only band on the set who didn't have to have a 2nd go. The audience gave us by far the biggest cheer and the producers said it was one of the best performances they had seen in years. I was sooooo proud (and relieved). BTW the same BBC production team will be filming the IV at Glastonbury next Saturday on the World jazz stage live (7.45 to 9), who knows if it'll get broadcast. Fingers crossed.
4: Getting told by the producer they wanted us to go on after tecno indie kids "Hot Chip" because they were at the other extreme end of the musical spectrum to us then finding out after wards in the post show reception they all grew up listening to Waterson and Carthy and love English folk.
5: Finding out a week later from EMI we had sold 2000 CD's on the back of the performance. Same thing happened when the Afro Celts did Jules Holland back in 1996. It was the turning point in our career. Shame there is so little live music on telly these days. Bring back Ready Steady Go.

Right click...Save As, then try a different media player usually works for me.

I was using Windows Media Player which didn't work with the saved file - what worked for you?

"It has to be a player with the DivX codec installed.
Windows Media player works."

Go to www.divx.com, download the free codec and it should play fine in Windows Media Player.. DivX gives very good image quality for very small file size. Cheers Nick |
