I just got a newsletter type thing from Fairport, and one of the fliers mentioned a new CD from Pegg and PJ Wright called "Galileo's Apology."  From the flier, it sounds like it is a studio recording, not the live CD that had been mentioned earlier.  It said to order go to PJ's wensite, Hedge of Sound.  So far, nothing about the CD is on the website.  Anyone else know more about the CD?  There was no track listing listed, FYI.  I'd love to hear it, as I'm on the wrong side of the pond, and I don't think they're touring in the area any time soon.  Thanks!

There's a song on Fairport's new record called 'Galileo's Apology', which I think has been written, or maybe co-written, by PJ Wright.
I expect that's what it means.

Right, saw the song title on the new CD, but there is also a new CD from Pegg and Wright called the same thing.  On the flier, there is a picture of the front of the CD, and above the cover it says, "The debut album from Dave Pegg and PJ Wright."

Hi Jonathon, The CD certainly exists, it was recorded at the Blue Moon Studios near Banbury in Oxfordshire during November 2006. As to a release date, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Peggy and PJ will be touring the UK in May/June so you can rest assured the album will be available by then.

On the flier, there are about 25 dates or so listed, starting mid March and going to the end of July.
Please forgive me if I don't type them all out  Wink.  I'm sure they'll be on the site soon enough...

Thanks Martin, good!

The Hitchin gig is on the club's website, so no longer tbc.

Don't tell more than 145 people, though, or we shan't get in Grin

I think there was a typo - I've just seen the dates elsewhere (FC website?) and it's now March 12th

Probably sorted because I queried whether Peggy would be doing the instore at FOPP.....which is Feb. 12th!

A track from Galileo's Apology will be featured on the next show of "The Banburyshire Brolly".
PJ kindly handed over a copy before the superb gig by Spire last night at the Ride A Cock Horse Folk CLub.
Peggy & PJ are lined up to do an interview on the Brolly (in March).

Galileo's Apology the new Cd from Peggy and PJ
« on: February 06, 2007, 01:25:59 PM » Quote

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
copied from Active

"Galileo’s Apology" the new Cd from Dave Pegg and PJ Wright

Track 1       Everything’s made in China (fools paradise)
A rollicking good opening track, in which PJ gives us his take on the World we live in, he is undoubtedly a great observer of life. Superb mandolin accompaniment from Peggy.

Track 2        Bread and Circuses
Once again PJ shows his prowess as a word smith with another new song, this time delivered in a more traditional folk style, a  gutsy heartfelt protest song, delivered with real gusto by PJ.

Track 3         Peggy’ Pub
Time for some acrobatics from Peggy’s mandolin as he & PJ revisit this evergreen favourite

Track 4        Linseed Memories
Enter the ukulele as Peggy sings this James Wood song.
On the surface it appears to be about the reminiscences of an old unwanted cricket bat, as it recalls those warm English summer days, the sound of willow on leather, the ripples of polite applause from the pavilion and the aroma of warm linseed oil as it is lovingly caressed by its owner. Now sadly the old bat is forgotten, unwanted and abandoned in the dark, hanging on the back of the shed door………..…………………........... Or is it?

Track 5       Galileo’s Apology
The Title track yet another  masterly offering from the pen of PJ once again Peggy gets the opportunity to take up   his mandolin.  As many of you will know this song has been covered by  Fairport Convention on their latest Cd “Sense of Occasion, however here the song is given a very different treatment.

Track 6     Donegan’s  Gone
Peggy sings this Mark Knoffler song, written in tribute to the late great king of skiffle and true gentleman, Lonnie Donegan.

Track 7       Bushes and Briar's
The  chaps dip in to the treasure chest that is the songbook of the fabulous Sandy Denny, beautiful acoustic guitar and great vocal from PJ. Peggy regards this number as one of his favourite Sandy Denny songs.

Track 8      Song for Sandy
Peggy penned and sings this tribute to Sandy Denny,  this song appeared on Peggy's solo Cd “Cocktail Cowboy” which was released in 1983 here he is ably supported by PJ on slide guitar.

Track 9         Bankruptured
Another long time favourite, this tune goes back to 1977 when Peggy wrote it in celebration of him acquiring his first Martin guitar.

Track 10       The Journeymen
Peggy gives his vocal chords another airing with this beautiful Steve Ashley number.

Track 11        King Harvest
Peggy and PJ are big fans of The Band, here PJ sings a bluesy groove backed by some fab guitar playing.

Track 12         Pipeline
Peggy and PJ really flex their digits as thay have a bit of fun with this instrumental, originally recorded by The Chanteys.

Track 13     It Doesn’t Matter any More
The album closes with this Paul Anka penned song, Peggy and PJ doff their caps to a musical hero, the phenomenon that was Buddy Holly.

All in all this is a thoroughly good album, PJ is a seriously good writer, having the ability to tell a ripping good yarn. His observational and word skills enable him to make serious social comment about the World many of us recognise.
His vocal delivery is of the very highest quality, projecting with great clarity. As many people know, PJ is also a wonderful all rounder on guitar, be it country style rock on the peddle steel, playing electric rock AXE, or gentle acoustic, he always shows great sensitivity whatever the genre.
Peggy shows on the album that he too can comfortably deliver a superb lead vocal. Although he is almost universally recognised as one of the greatest bass players of his generation, here he displays that he is also an accomplished guitarist and mandolin player.

OK by now you will have sussed that I am a huge fan of Peggy and PJ but I truly think this will be a wonderful and treasured addition to your Cd library. Highly recommended.
