Over Production?

Having seen (from a distance) the development of an album or two, the tendency to overindulge is obvious - the classic example being Tears For Fears'  "Seeds Of Love" which has precisely 8 times the amount of overtracking and dubbing due to the fact that no-one seemed to be able to tell these guys to just cut it.

What's the betting that Kate Bush's May (probably delayed again by now) album suffers from the same syndrome?


Another reason to like live albums - you can't take 2 years over one!

Oh, it's total overindulgence, no doubt due to Roland Orzabal's ego, but I love it all the same

Mind you ... I still love that track !!

However, for over-production, check out the last two Marillion albums ... they played the 'work in progress' live, it was truly excellent ... on the album it had been polished to such an extent that the 'magic' was lost

Bad Man's song is wicked! Totally over produced and fantastic for it. Can you imagine them doing that album live, acoustically? It would be really ****! Over produced and pained over yes, but three million people cannot be wrong?

Yes, overdubbing is a problem area. Multi tracking offered a plethora of options. You can really get it wrong very easily. It's all about making the right decisions. I little like life really?

I've been thinking about this one, and as with many of the questions relating to "ones preference" of anything musical, it is just that, ones preference. There will always be somebody who is not happy.

To some, just adding reverb to a recording constitutes over production. In the wondrous world of folk, just using an amplifier can be seen as over production! God forbid anybody who uses an electric guitar!

I'm sure to some (people of the day), Leonardo Da Vinci's work was slightly over-the-top? times change and things change with them, hopefully for the better, but sadly, often not so.

Well after hearing Ric's distorted violin last night at Southend, I think there is always a place for experimentation - but then I find the echo annoying, so it's very subjective.
