Hi Mark
Any amusing anecdotes that you would care to share with us about recording sessions you have worked on? (I think particularly of our very own David Hughes, but it could be about anyone?)

Technology, I **** it! It seems that if I don’t reply quick enough, the forum message browser cuts me off and bins my reply?…. Now I will write messages in Word or notepad and cut & paste them into the message browser.
Stories relating David Hughes? One springs to mind. The session in Ian Hughes’s, David’s brothers shed. Picture this: A suburban scene of tranquillity. A Sunday afternoon and evening spent in Ian’s shed. Situated in the back garden of a 1930s terrace, overlooked by the Maldon Sally Anne Hall, They were trying to out-do us. Trouble was, they didn’t have Spencer Cozens on their side! Nor, do they hold a groove down very well!
BOOM!! The seismic pounding could be heard amongst the smell of many-roast dinner.
We went on into the night, with three, if not four of us crammed into this tiny space completing the entire keyboard overdubs for This Other Eden. Sheds are just so bloody useful you know? Every man should have one, if not three!
The making of the entire album was a spiritual experience, start to finish.

Ian Hughes's old house, Mark? That's older than that. 1880's I reckon. Nice shed though, built it himself.

BOOM! indeed. My pre-mastered copy, with no bass roll off, nearly killed my speakers.
If your not familiar with 'This Other Eden' it is a bit of a sonic masterpiece. Hughes' songs are linked by a series of short re-mixes, by Tucker/Cozens/Hughes that really blend the album together.
NP: "It's Hard To Imagine" Eddi Reader on vocals, Danny Thompson on double bass. (Who could ask for anything more?)

Sheds must be treated with respect as I know you know. Recording or talking in them, what we want is quality!

On one occasion where David Sanborn is "allegedly" working on a session in recording studio 'somewhere in America". David is "allegedly" not too happy with the session, or the music he is playing over. He's also not too happy about the degree of lighting in the studio. he claims it's too bright for him to play properly. So, he asks the studio engineer to turn the lighting down to obtain a "Better mood". Having made several attempts at the performance and failed, each take, the lighting was turned down a little more. Finally the lighting is down to almost complete darkness, and the tape rolls one more time... This time David failed to make his musical entry. David has decided taken this shadowy opportunity to exit the studio for good! Whether or not this is true, it's a great story!  Anybody know any other stories? Maart, you must remember a few? Mark. |
