Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that you like a bit of prog, Maart. Assuming I am correct, who are your favourites and are there any newish prog bands you would rate, or are they all merely recreating facsimile copies of the 70's heyday for prog? Would you describe Jethro Tull as prog-rock or something else?

New Day Yesterday . One of my favourite Tull tracks. Was it not the one that IA said at Crop a couple of years ago, something to the effect that 'We're only playing this because Maart wants us to do it'. I think you guested on IA's solo spot by the way. ( My memory's a little hazy - it was quite late at night.. ahem.)

Yes okay, I did like some of the proggy things in the 70s and very early eighties. Early Genesis, early Yes and Pink Floyd. I had long hair and flares... Seriously though some of the music was far in advance of what's been done since. I suppose people were more open minded in those days, and the supplementary benefit of a musical education really paid off listening to stuff like Hatfield and the North, Gentle Giant, Chick Corea, Bruford, National Health and King Crimson. The standard of musicianship was what sold me really, and the ambition of one day being able to play difficult stuff and still make it rock. Still trying...
Jethro Tull I suppose was prog-rock, but then I never used the same tags as other people. To me they were just a great musical rock band, as were Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. The music was a little more complex, but that's allowed isn't it?

Beats me why everyone thinks Fish "was" Marillion. He was only in the band a few (albeit successful) years. They've made some great music without him. They had a top 10 single last year. Steve Hogarth has been their singer since, what, '88. And he was in the George last week! |

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Marillion, except that someone told me they sounded like Genesis. I was present, with David Hughes, at the '86 Marillion thing at Milton Keynes but we went to see Tull and we ran away before it got dark..
