Is 'The Maldonians' really fact, or Garrison Keillor-style fiction?

The Maldonians? Fact. All the way through. I didn’t make any of it up. It is the story of what happened in Maldon over a hundred years ago and every word spoken, was spoken. Hell of a story of how a town got a sewer, a new bridge and a lake to swim in. The council are now trying to fill in the lake by the way (see: “Health & Safety” on “I Can Explain”.)

Who are your favourite authors?

Now, I have to admit it, I am the world’s worst reader. Can’t tell you the last book I read (yes I can, it’s in the toilet, “Nicholas Nickelby”). But of the few I remember: in my youth I was in love with Salinger of course. Then came people like Richard Brautigan and Hunter S. Thompson. I read all of Hermann Hesse in my twenties, naturally, all D.H.Lawrence and lots of writers I can’t remember now, Waugh, Wodehouse, Joyce Carey, Powys in no particular order. But then I thought that, actually, football is just as valid so I gave up. I am definitely part of the facetious school. Ignorance a byword. These days I am simply ill-read.

Who would you be secretly (or loudly) be especially impressed by if they covered one of your songs?

Randy Newman, Loudon Wainwright, Tom Waits, Muse, Radiohead and ******g Fairport Convention! In fact I hope a heroine of mine is about to record one of my songs on her new album, if I finish it in time! I’ll be the first to let you know!

What comes first, the words or the music?

I doodle around on the guitar and think of words to fit. Never written the words first although they can turn up pretty much at the same time.

I think we'll be rehearsing in Southport at the end of November. Chris has a gig with that other lot in the middle of the rehearsal period, I'm going to have to drive him up to Kendal for it. New material? Yes, oh yes.

Believe you will be rehearsing for the St Agnes tour in Southport during November. Don't suppose there will be any rehearsals open to the public - so to speak 

well if you don't ask 

Either way see you at Leyland on the last night of the tour. With or without gonk

No lucky gonk, Anji, never. But, here's a thing. On my first concert in Germany, in the Spring of 1992, in Wuppertal, I came off stage at the end - it had been a wonderful evening, great sound, good communicative crowd, they started calling for an encore. As they did, I looked down and there, on the floor, was a quarter dollar. I picked it up, put it in my guitar case as a keepsake and it's been there ever since. Means a lot to me.

Haven't been back to Germany for seven years now.

And Mike, no, no public rehearsals. The girls like to make all the mistakes behind closed doors.  (Chris Leslie is a dirty little swot though. He turns up note perfect. Typical.)

The nearest we get to Scotland, Anji, is Carlisle I'm afraid. But, I'll be near you in March/April when I'm supporting Jacqui McShee's Pentangle. Hell of a band! I'm really looking forward to that.
