Not really because: a) You don't mess with words, around Mr Hughes. He's got a black belt in lexicography. b) I got my chestnuts roasted, answering one too many questions, yesterday.

Colin; I always come in through the 'favourites' entrance. Does it help your (our) google rating if I do a search every time instead? Regards SK

Colin, How does the system of local moderators work? Are they volunteers, press ganged or appointed? Are their computers linked to yours? Also, how do I delete a previous login name & email I have never used? I signed up ages ago from my home computer and forgot my password!.

Glad it's not just me then who forgot their password and had to log in under another name! I've asked exactly the same question! Do we have a funeral for them?!

I don't know. Some people eh? Forget their own heads if they weren't tied on at the neck! Good job we're not a bank... Actually I wonder how much money is tied up in accounts to which people have forgotten details, passwords, etc Regarding the rogue accounts, we can leave them or we can delete them, it won't make that much difference. If they're left they'll drift off into obscurity anyway. Actually, deleting accounts tends to make a mess if there were posts attributed to them so It's probably better if they're just left - reminders of other lives perhaps! cheers Nick

I always come in through the 'favourites' entrance. Does it help your (our) google rating if I do a search every time instead? All of this site is written in PHP and if you look at the address bar, you will see that you are always accessing a single page, called index.php This does cause the search engines some grief and means that we have a lowly rank, considering the popularity of the site. What would help the most, is if you add hyperlinks to TalkAwhile, whenever you mention us, in other forums, or on web sites. Searching and following the link to here helps a bit, but mustn't be done too often. Thanks for the thought

Now I'm a rogue account at home I can start posting and replying to myself. If you were a bank, could you lend me a fiver till Friday? Barry says: tidied up the formatting

That wouldn't be the first time someone ended up talking to themselves on this board

Colin, There appears to be a plethora of teachers on this board, does the number of postings increase during the day in the school holidays?

There appears to be a plethora of teachers on this board, does the number of postings increase during the day in the school holidays? Is plethora the correct collective noun for teachers? If there is a pattern in accesses to this board, I can't spot it. It used to be very Fairport dependent (Cropredy and Wintour), but that effect seems to be diminishing.

The only pattern I can detect is that it is generally quieter at the weekends with about 30% fewer people logging on on saturdays and sundays. So, either people have more interesting stuff to do at the weekends or they're sneekily using the office computer to browse the boards in working hours Cheers Nick (currently at work )

I tend to visit while I'm supposed to be planning etc - to relieve the boredom (& we won't mention lunch breaks when I'm supervising kids 'kept in'!!

only pattern I can spot is that whenever I log in, everyone seems to have gone!!

Colin, I got a 'page cannot be displayed' when trying to access Talkawhile this evening. This lasted for about 15mins. Is this because you were carrying out maintainance?

The database that runs the whole server (not just TalkAwhile) went wrong and killed all the email accounts. I had to shut things down, while I fixed it and re-booted. It didn't take long to fix and no data lost. However I am planning to move everything, to a more modern server, on a more reliable connection, within the next few weeks.

Interesting - we've had big e-mail problems at work for the past 2 days - seems to be a national problem. Wonder whether ther's any connection (or not - if you see what I mean).

As far as I can see, a whole load of people (200+) established connections to download a file and then did nothing. I don't know why this upset my server.
This has happened a few times, over the last week or so, but this is a remote machine, so it's difficult to monitor.
