Yes, he quit in 2013.
I heard quite a bit of their stuff early on, as my two lads were then in their teens and going through their "your music's rubbish, this is really ace" period... bless 'em.

Like so many others I got into ZZ Top around the time of Eliminator but a friend had been a fan for a while and introduced me to their earlier stuff. I saw them at Donington in 85 and then had to wait many years before seeing them again, this time in Manchester. Probably my favourite American rock band. Very sad to hear about the passing of ZZ Top bassman Dusty Hill.
Saw ZZ Top just the once back in 1991 at Milton Keynes Bowl, headlining a roasting hot summers day that featured Bryan Adams, Thunder and Little Angels.
Their combination of blues, rock 'n roll, stagecraft and pure honest entertainment were magical that day.
RIP Dusty...

First ZZ Top show at the Frank Erwin Center August 23, 1986. Tickets were such a hot commodity we wound up sitting in the rafters, possibly behind the stage. I remember Dusty Hill doing the "Velcro Fly." I think they were all dressed in blue jumpsuits and white baseball caps, which was very '80s.
Saw them the second time at ACL Live in 2013, and again in 2015 at the Cedar Park Center (with a post-show Q&A and photo op).
Last ZZ Top show, 50th anniversary tour at the Austin360 Amphitheater May 19, 2019. I was really there to see opener Bad Company. The guy next to me was too large for his seat, so he took the chairs apart and pushed mine out into the aisle. After Bad Co. I bailed. I could hear ZZ Top's first few songs on the long walk back to my car. I thought I'd have a chance to see them again in a more comfortable environment.
Mrs. J From A saw them at an infamous Labor Day concert in 1974 at the University of Texas. The huge crowd damaged the football field, leading to a 20-year ban on concerts at that facility.

It was 2013 when I saw them in Manchester. The support act was the Ben Miller Band. I remember Billy Gibbons telling us that on the flight over he was talking to one of them and asked if this was going to be their first time in Europe. The guy replied that this was first time they'd been out of the southern states! |
