Texas songwriting legend Billy Joe Shaver died in Waco today at the age of 81.
He wrote 9 of the 10 songs on Waylon Jennings' 1973 album "Honky Tonk Heroes," thus helping to invent outlaw country.
I didn't see BJS live, I don't think, even though he made the rounds of the Austin clubs for the last 40 years. Local musicians spoke reverently about him, though. Willie, Kris and Kinky Friedman are about the only ones left, now.

Just about to post this. I've only heard two of his records - When I Get My Wings and Gypsy Boy - but they are both excellent. A stroke, apparently. |

Cousins has written this on FB: I am deeply saddened at the passing of Tony Hooper. Without Tony there would have been no Strawberry Hill Boys. No Strawbs! For me, Tony’s own words sum it up best.... “Ah me, things aren’t what they used to be, Ah my, in days gone by.” Rest in peace. |

This is so sad. News travels so horribly fast in this age. I learned just a few minutes ago. I've always loved the early Strawbs best, with that blend of Dave and Tony's voices. RIP Tony.
