My thoughts on last night in Liverpool, the last night of the tour, and Peggy's birthday (yes, of course we did).
3rd time I've been to the Tung - really great venue (but make sure you don't sit in B-E, the first 5 rows are flat, which always catches people out), great sound, great ambience.
We had Danny Bradley, given a home town gig after his heroics on the Winter tour, as support again (he's bloody impressive, not quite my thing, but really memorable tunes played in a very unique finger picking, guitar as percussion kind of stylie), so we had the he introduced Fairport and they came on and played his last number thing.
Then off...the setlist was I think near identical to that which Peascod posted a few days ago (copied below), with, I think (I'm no expert on the recent material) no Moses Waits
Walk a While
Crazy Man Michael
Banbury Fair
Fotheringay
The Year of 59
Moses Waits
I’m Already There
Steampunkery
The Hiring Fair
The Festival Bell
Slip Jigs and Reels
The Banks of the Sweet Primroses
Bankruptured
Lallah Rook
Doctor of Physick
John Gaudie
Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Matty Groves
Meet On The Ledge
I have to admit to skipping out after WKWTTG - I've seen enough Mattys and MOTL and I wanted my bed and to avoid the scramble.
First time I've seen this 4-piece (I did once see a F(A)C with no Peggy in it) and it was much as I expected. Massively impressive, beautifully played, 'great', utterly appalling stand up routine from Ric, but for me, just crying out for DM to add a little dynamic thrust into the equation. Folk-rock sans drums (even percussion like Gerry used to do on the Autumn dates) just doesn't wash. So, I can't help but feel a little disappointed.
Having said that, I allowed myself to enjoy much of it including material I don't normally go for, like Lallah Rookh. That>Docter of Physick>John Gaudie>Time was a brilliant sequence.
So, how to summarise? Well, I'm very much looking forward to the Spring tour...

As for the Tung, still just about toying with Steeleye later in the month...
