Shirley Collins : Archangel Hill (Domino Records, green vinyl LP, 2023).
Along with the other 2 comeback albums, this is very good. I think she's decided to leave it there.

This morning's coffee listening : In Time 1988-2003 - The Best Of REM An impulse bargain purchase, and I don't usually listen to Greatest Hits or Best Ofs, but this is the kind of well put together compilation that reminds you just how good REM were. Almost enough to make me start buying up all the REM albums I don't have to fill the gaps in my collection.

I enjoy Best ofs, what I dont like is where there are a couple of unreleased tracks to tempt regulars to buy. My favourite Best of is Teenage Fanclub which gets regular plays.

I have always preferred to make my own, because in my not so humble opinion, I'm the only one who seems to be able to do it right. Jules

It's probably for the best...

When I heard of Barry John's passing, so soon after that of JPR Williams, I remarked that the sportspeople my generation grew up watching are gradually leaving the fields of play; this is also the case with the artists/bands of my youth leaving the stage. Inevitable, but still sad.

A (my own) digital recreation of a Cooking Vinyl compilation from the 80s: New Roots. It introduced me to a lot of artists from across the CV spread. Still holds up for me - there's nothing I want to skip on there!

I've downloaded a couple of Strawbs albums as I must admit I've never really listened to them before. So today I have been listening to 'The Magic Of It All' and 'From The Witchwood'. It's opened up a whole new world to me.

It's opened up a whole new world to me. Dave Cousins is a really fine writer of lyrics and Witchwood matches them with great music. One of their finest but then they evolved as they explored a rockier amd proggier sound. Many good albums to choose from here but my heart lies with the slightly more folk influenced era.

It's opened up a whole new world to me. There are a lot of years between these albums, and the band certainly went through some changes. Witchwood was my intro to the band and I still think it's a pretty strong album. I'm with Will here: I prefer their folkier material.

Virginia Astley - The singing places A download of EP length released last year: A mixture of field recordings and music from the borders of folk and 'classical'. It's wonderful to listen to a piece of music and have the thought "I wish I was there" Strongly recommended. https://virginiaastley.bandcamp.com/album/the-singing-places

She was doing a performance with her daughter and the audience was about 5. Lovely, and very talented lady. I buy all her releases...

She's a rare talent indeed. I only knew about "From gardens...." prior to seeing a write-up about the latest release (in Shindig, I think ). Now I'm hoping there are a lot more gardens to explore

The new Decemberists single 'Burial Ground'. Very strong 60s West Coast sound - a bit different for them, but I like it. The final couplet is pure Colin Meloy.
