Could do with Tapestry a lot higher but Who's Next , considering it's from the remnants of Lifehouse , a collapsed project , makes a real good choice for any non Floyd fans . Especially with "Pure & Easy" tacked on it.
Tapestry would easily be my favourite by a female artist. Incredible Now that is an interesting question. Favourite albums by female artists. Not sure we should be making these distinctions in the 21st century but I an going to have a think anyway.

1. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake 2. Best of Teenage Fanclub 3. Wedding Present - George Best 4. Merry Hell - Im Wide Awake 5. Eclection 6. FC - WWDOOH 7. FC - Unhalfbricking 8. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker 9. Bob - Blood on the Tracks 10. Tansads - Flock 11. Embrace - The Good Will Out 12. Mott The Hoople - Wildlife 13. Love - Forever Changes 14. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks 15. Al Stewart - Love Chronicles 16. Johnny Cash - American IV 17. Grateful Dead - American Beauty 18. Lucinda Williams - West 19. Oyster Band - Holy Bandits 20. That order could change at any time and, probably 11 and 13 should be higher.

Not even sure the second one does either, does it (the Short Cuts one, I'm guessing...but compilation albums is a whole other genre anyway)?

As a female I give my permission Interesting, but would it include female fronted bands or just solo female artists? Giving this further thought and it is a bit of a sticky wicket. I would say yes if they were the main creative force in the band (Heart or Fotheringay for example, off the top of my head) but where does that leave a band like Fleetwood Mac with two great female songwriters but also a crucial male one. Might be best to keep it simple.

An album is an album. There was nothing to suggest any genre was excluded.
In most album lists I've seen live albums and compilations are excluded and are given their own category. But you're quite right, that wasn't explicit here I don't think. Although interesting that (I think) this is the only inclusion of either?

Although interesting that (I think) this is the only inclusion of either? I included a couple of live albums in my list (Bruce Cockburn and Twelfth Night). I didn't think about including compilations though.

Ok, here goes. 24 (I couldn't narrow it down any further) great albums by chick singers : Blue - Joni Mitchell Tapestry - Carole King Hejira - Joni Mitchell Nightout - Ellen Foley Something's Going On - Frida She's So Unusual - Cyndi Lauper Different Light - The Bangles The Dreaming - Kate Bush Hounds of Love - Kate Bush Suzanne Vega - Suzanne Vega Solitude Standing - Suzanne Vega Famous Blue Raincoat - Jennifer Warnes Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman Kite - Kirsty Macoll A Few Small Repairs - Shawn Colvin I'm With Stupid - Aimee Mann Ingenue - k d lang Sheryl Crow - Sheryl Crow Mortal City - Dar Williams Gone From Danger - Joan Baez Surfacing - Sarah McLachlan Car Wheels On A Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams Fashionably Late - Linda Thompson Big Machine - Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band This is deeply flawed because it includes nothing by Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield, Carly Simon or Emmylou Harris of whom I only own compilations. Also because in reality at least 5 of the 10 best female artist albums ever are by Joni Mitchell. And I would have liked to include The Pretenders and Gilmore & Roberts but they didn't fit the criteria.

There were plenty I had to leave off by the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Roseanne Cash, Elastica and Virginia Kettle to name but a few.
