I love Liege & Lief but such is the strength of the canon, it's a mid-level Fairport release for me, at least enjoyment-wise. My top five is subject to change but currently: 1. Tipplers Tales 2. Angel Delight 3. Full House (if the reissue with Poor Will & Now Be Thankful is a valid choice. ) 4. The Bonny Bunch Of Roses 5. The Five Seasons If Full House is dodgy, remove it, bump four & five up a place and add The Wood & The Wire as the new five. Great credit here for going out on a limb and putting Tipplers first, although even I wouldn't go that far ... perhaps third favourite after Unhalfbricking and Full House.

I particularly enjoyed the band when they featured the triumvirate of Swarb, Peggy and Simon. Wish Vertigo would have let them see out their contract rather than pay them off. It never fails to amaze me though that, given the amount of line-ups the band went through, how high the the quality of their releases remained. Even "lesser" albums (insert your own choice here) were usually, at the very least, interesting. Paradoxical how a band with so many epochs remain a one-off.

That's such a difficult choice - top album of all time... What criteria do you use to choose?
If I'm thinking of an album that's been with me a long time, and that I still reckon is darn near perfect, it would be hard to beat Jackson Browne's Late For The Sky. Or Bruce Cockburn's Circles In The Stream. Totally subjective choices, and not ones that would make most people's top 50, I guess. Or then maybe Al Stewart's Modern Times or Past Present & Future... Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief get in there too... So does Trick Of The Tail. And Broadsword And The Beast and Songs From The Wood. Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures... Twelfth Night's Live And Let Live. The more I think, the more I come up with, so I shall stop there... Oh, and Argus. How could I forget that one...? What else have I forgotten?

I'm not sure they'd agree. They talk very lovingly of their pay off. £7k each wasn't it? [c£40k at today's values] Bought houses and other grown up stuff, I think...

I think in pretty much every Fairport book I've read there a paragraph or two from Peggy saying how delighted he was with his Vertigo dosh.

Pink Floyd, that's who I forgot! Dark Side of the Moon and Wish you Were Here both should figure.

Standing back a long way there are a lot of contenders, but I nominate:
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks. In a golden year of albums, this stood above all else.
Then again there's:
The Lemonheads - Shame About Ray. I'll forgive them including a cover of 'Mrs Robinson', but the rest at only 25 minutes is perfectly formed.
Or quietly just being lovely:
Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels

Wish Vertigo would have let them see out their contract rather than pay them off.
If you are an FC fan you should be rejoicing that they were paid off. Had Vertigo not pulled the plug when they did there would probably have been no FC around since then. Then again their reputation and legacy would be intact and not tainted by the awful records released since.

I really do like that line-up though. Having said that, I think pretty much every studio release from Gladys' Ridge onwards has been worth owning and I find a a fair few of them more enjoyable than some of the "classic" releases.

Oh my goodness, how do I pick one? My first thought was to agree with Andy, DSOTM has to be up there as one that you can turn to at any time and it doesn't sound boring or dated. Then I thought, but what about those albums that have had great meaning at a particular time in my life? So here's the (short) list, in no particular order:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds Jon and Vangelis - Short Stories Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse
If my house was on fire and I could only save five albums, I guess Gigspanner, Dead Can Dance, Sigur Ros, Elton John, Fairport and yes, even Bellowhead, wouldn't survive the conflagration.

1 Who's Next - The Who 2 A Question of Balance - Moody Blues 3 Fog on the Tyne - Lindisfarne 4 Liege and Lief - Fairport Convention 5 Led Zeppelin 4 - Led Zeppelin 6 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel 7 Teaser and the Firecat - Cat Stevens 8 Abbey Road - The Beatles 9 Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 10 No Secrets - Carly Simon 11 In Rock - Deep Purple 12 Tapestry - Caole King 13 Surf's Up - Beach Boys

Could do with Tapestry a lot higher but Who's Next , considering it's from the remnants of Lifehouse , a collapsed project , makes a real good choice for any non Floyd fans . Especially with "Pure & Easy" tacked on it.

Tapestry would easily be my favourite by a female artist. Incredible

It's a good choice for a Floyd fan too. *points at self* And yes, for a flawed album, it's paradoxically all but flawless. Jules
