Wishbone Ash (Andy Powell & co) at Gloucester Guildhall this Friday.  Possibly The Magpie Arc at the same venue on 30th Oct.  Nothing else booked until Saving Grace in Eastbourne in December.

Not sure why but i seem to prefer the Martin Turner band doing Wishbone Ash stuff.

Me too, by a country mile...and, for me, I'm fairly sure I know why - because he's the voice of the early material and is much more comfortable playing stuff from that period and does it more faithfully (I think).

Having said that, I met Andy Powell outside the Chester Live Rooms the other weekend.  I was walking my demented old pa-in-law around and did a "oh, you're Andy Powell" double take.  He was brilliant with the oldie.  Lovely guy.  They were holding their fan club convention there.

I've got a few coming up after a quiet summer (for concerts at any rate)

Pete Roth trio featuring Bill Bruford at Band On The Wall tomorrow night
Back to BotW for Vieux Farka Toure on Friday
Ian Prowse at St Helens Citadel on Saturday, then back there again a week later for Merry Hell(oween).

Good interview with Bill in Rolling Stone from earlier this year. A couple of extracts...

Rick told me he calls the Union album “Onion” because it makes him cry.
That’s a good one, yeah.

Did you feel the same way?
I haven’t listened to it.

But you’re on the record.
I’m on the record somewhere in there, but it got computerized to death...

What brought you back to music?
One day just passing the drum kit as I did every day in my office, I thought, “Damn, that looks good,” like an ice cream. I thought, “I’ll just have a little play and see if I can remember anything ,” ’cause 13 years off is a long time.

Friday night, Robin Trower at the Aztec Theater in San Antonio!

Probably the last visit to my home state, so I will be there with bells on.

West end centre Aldershot    November 1st.   Multi-award winning musician and songwriter / Freddie Mercury Scholarship Winner / PRS Guitars artist Leoni Jane Kennedy performs an acoustic tribute to Rush with special guest Eóin de Paor from Moving Picture (Rush tribute uk).  No idea what its going to be like but sounds interesting and is only a 10 minute walk from home.

The Westy is now just over 50 years old in being and was started by my old English/drama teacher and a few other teachers from the school. Started as a drama theater place, later music, comedy etc gigs.  As an apprentice carpenter joiner, I got involved following a meeting with ex teachers in a local pub and helped build the stage, stage flats etc for the first ever performance of Guys and Dolls.  Its gone on in leaps and bounds since then, now part of the Hampshire cultural trust.   A bit more corporate now than the early days, but still a good place to be.
