I'm not sure if I've ever seen this subject addressed on this forum but I'm genuinely interested. Are there any first lines of a song that, by themselves, made you want to hear more? I realize that ,usually, by the time you've made that decision, you've already heard what follows but looking back, have you realized that, hey, that was clever? As an example, my personal all time favorite is by Barry Dransfield on the opening track of "Fiddler's Dream". "You can only hold your breath so long", is, to me, the perfect opening to the rest of the album. What say ye?

One suggested by the above correspondent in a similar thread about intros - which had largely instrumental examples.
It's by Ian Dury and is about a lady from London.

"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend come inside, come inside" karn evil 9 and in a similar way "sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent" aqualung. Sometimes it's purely the line and others delivery can increase the impact.

Pistol shots ring out in the bar room night, enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall, she sees the bartender in a pool of blood, cries out, "My god they killed them all".
Possibly more than a line but it sure grabbed me.
