*shudder*

The funny thing is I'm listening to more Beatles and related stuff at the moment than in decades.  I do find most (one or two notable exceptions) Lennon solo material average at very best, and there's a bucket load nowhere near that level.  Give me the Frog Chorus any day of the week...

I agree that solo Beatles is never as good as Beatles.  I listen to solo Lennon and miss Paul.  I listen to solo Macca and miss John.  But the Frog Chorus can feck off, regardless.

The Frog Chorus does Imagine.  With strings.  Now this is what we need....

Imagine there's no Rupert
It isn't hard to do
No need for Bill the Badger
And no Edward Trunk too
Imagine no Frog Chorus
Blighting Macca's oeuvre
You-oo-oo-oo-oo
You may say I'm a curmudgeon
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day we'll all stand together
And tell that bear that he can do one

I detect an intimate knowledge of the Frog Chorus...are you attempting to conceal your true admiration for this masterpiece in the name of coolness?  Grin

I loathe both song and bear.

So, despite all the cynicism, it turns out to be bloody marvellous.

The demo of Power To The People and the strings only mix of Imagine are worth it alone. And the alternative version of Happy Xmas(War Is Over) completely refreshes the song by paring it back and will be my go to version during the forthcoming festive season.

Never ever let me hear this.  Please.

Why ever not? It is just an isolation of the string overdubs from the original recording and it is really beautiful and I say that as someone who does not really like the song itself.

Incidentally, the live "raw studio mixes" on disc 3 are like listening to an entirely different album, much more like the Preceding Plastic Ono Band album and may sway a few people who are unconvinced by the album as released, though they sound slightly unfinished in places. It is enthralling listening. I have never thought it was a great album, though I like most of it but this is as fascinating and revelatory in its way as Dylan's Another Self Portrait set and is so much better than I expected it to be. It is not a once only listen. There is a lot here I will return to.

I found myself being swayed enough to look it up in Spotify to give it a listen. I find myself in total agreement with Al
