Not Perfect. Never Claimed To Be.

My first, second and continuing reaction is that this is ludicrous. You may think otherwise. Herewith the blurb.

On October 5, EMI will release a six-disc box set of John Lennon’s 1971 album “Imagine,” which many feel is the best of his solo works. Titled “The Ultimate Collection,” this remixed and remastered 140-track collection is fully authorized by Yoko Ono Lennon, who oversaw the production and creative direction.

Spread across four CDs and two Blu-ray discs, this truly unique expanded edition offers a variety of listening experiences, ranging from the brand new Ultimate Mixes of the album, which reveal new levels of definition and clarity, to the Raw Studio Mixes that allow listeners to hear Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band’s original, unadorned performances, to 5.1 surround sound mixes and a Quadrasonic Album Mix, presenting the original four speaker mix remastered in Quadrasonic sound (a four-speaker audiophile format that was briefly popular in the early 1970s) for the first time in nearly 50 years.

The set features previously uncirculated demos, rare outtakes and isolated track elements, and also includes “The Evolution Documentary,” a track-by-track audio montage that details each song from demo to master recording via instructions, rehearsals, recordings, multitrack exploration and studio chatter.

Well, it is like many of these sort of releases. There is a lot I would like to hear here but probably only once. It is interesting rather than entertaining. I'm in for the single disc as I don't have the album on CD and maybe a download as it is a fraction of the cost of the box.

Having just Googled 'Quadrasonic' and found that it's the same thing as Quadrophonic, which is what we did actually call that short-lived audio movement back in the day, I can now focus my attention on the truly shocking line (to me, at least) in the whole promo blurb which is:

“Imagine,” which many feel is the best of his solo works.

As though Plastic Ono Band never happened  Huh

Well I quite fancy it myself.

If you think this is overblown, you should see what they're planning for The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society:

All those demos and previously unreleased tracks, but the compilers haven't included the B side of Happy Xmas.

Which, if you've heard it, is probably just as well, IMHO, it's dreadful...

I think POB tends to be the critics' favourite but it can be a hard listen for people who just want a nice pop record. Imagine is probably the popular favourite so the statement holds true. Just to be perverse, my own favourites are Walls & Bridges and Rock n Roll. I'm in for  6 disc set of the latter.  Grin

Perhaps because it is a Yoko song (Listen The Snow Is Falling)? There are no other Yoko songs on here as far as I can see. Besides, she has her own new album coming out and all her Apple albums have recently appeared in expanded remastered versions.

80% decent imho. I could live without I Don't Want to Be A Soldier and, to be honest, the title track which I have always thought was a bit of a dirge.

Let me have a closer butcher's....

Imagine - a fine song, and though we've all heard it too many times, that's an unfair barometer - 4/5
Crippled Inside - strangely compelling vaudeville outing - 3/5
Jealous Guy - arguably this is the album's true stand-out piano 'ballad' - 5/5
It's So Hard - largely forgettable bluesy shuffle - 2/5
I Don't Want To Be A Soldier - Lennon's guitar has bite but this track is otherwise a yawn - 1/5
Gimme Some Truth - sensational example of Lennon vitriol - 5/5
Oh My Love - one of those little tender love songs that he did so well - 4/5
How Do You Sleep? - musically this is ace, but docked a point for unnecessary meanness to Macca - 4/5
How? - another of those little tender love songs that he did so well - 4/5
Oh Yoko! - another strangely compelling vaudeville outing, a nice bit of light relief - 3/5

So all in all, a good album.  Only the end of side 1 lets it down IMO.  Perhaps its major fault is in its sequencing.

Really good Jules, pretty much how I see the album but I might give How? 5/5, a great confessional piece.

If I'm feeling really bitter and twisted I'll give you my scores later....but put it this way, Imagine itself struggles to a 1.  Wink Smiley Grin

Well, I like Imagine, and I'm not even a Beatles fan, but I just don't want or need this. I suppose some folk do, and that's why packages like this exist. I hope people enjoy it.  I'll stick with my Mobile Fidelity vinyl edition .  Which isn't my only copy of the album, so I live in a glass house.  Cool

Yep another overblown money grabbing exercise IMHO and some of the ‘special’ recordings probably require super-duper stereo systems to hear all the little nuances...not worth the effort

It's a decent album with some stand out songs and I personally love the title track. However, I yawn at these overblown box sets and have never understood why anyone would want so many versions of the same songs. But that's just me.
