That reflects my thoughts on Toyah, too. If she'd just let her singing be dominant over her chat about being a punk pensioner, I'd be happier.

Martin Joseph at Wychwood Folk and Music Club. Extraordinary, best gig of the year for me. Full of passion, energy and great songwriting. He really does have something worth listening to. A treat to see such a great artist in small intimate setting. Spring brings Phil Beer, Martin Simpson and Gilmore Roberts to the quiet village of Ascott under Wychwood. Very fortunate to have such a great venue 10 mins down the road.

Indeed, it's not like she needs to compensate for her voice or anything, which is still excellent... weird.

She always had that lisp though. Maybe that was part of it. Jules

Gotta love a bit of self-deprecation. Jules

Adam Ant was a total joy in Liverpool last night. Superfan (44 years ago, anyway) was in heaven and all her fears of what a shambles it could have been melted away quickly. Awesome setlist (with lots of early stuff), very punky punchy sound and, for most of it, Adam in pretty damned good voice (it faded a little for 3 or 4 songs on the back straight). For me, a total non believer back in the day this was a solid 8.5/10, much much better than I expected. Great fun.
Toyah supported. Brilliant (almost) 80s only setlist, again a punchy band (guitarist borrowed from Buck's Fizz apparently...he was brilliant), and she is still in amazing voice. I could very much however do without the Butlins Red Coat act she just can't stop herself doing. And, despite her oft-repeated protestations, she really was never punk, and her music certainly wasn't. But if you cut out the intros and the downplayed the theatrics a tad she too was bloody good.
Ah im so pleased about Adam, as I say Ive heard mixed reviews, but i guess we all have good and bad days...Yes Toyah seldom seems to disappoint these days, and if anything is better than she was when I saw in her heydays

Focus at Lowther Pavilion, Lytham. Played all I wanted to hear and more besides. Very fine musicians and an extremely enjoyable evening. Thijs van Leer is like an eccentric great uncle, whilst for 79 Pierre van der Linden is amazing.

I saw Steve Knightley and the Winter Yard Band at the Empire in Coventry last week. He'd made a few pleas on Facebook for more ticket sales, which must have worked as it seemed fairly full in the end.
And it was amazing. The band are fantastic and the support act, True Foxes, were also very good indeed. They sang on the last record SK did so came on and sang with the band.
Steve is also a fellow Coventry Polyversity graduate and setup his first folk club in the city!
I used to see Show of Hands regularly with a group of friends, so sort of drifted away a bit (Kids came along, time and money for gigs was scarce! I wasn't too keen on the last few LPs they did. After Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed I felt it was all getting a bit to same-y).
This lineup, featuring electric guitar, really works well. I've always thought SK wanted to rock out a bit.

Good - I've certainly often wanted him to...

N'Faly Kouyate in Stroud last night. Playing his new album Finishing in full, albeit not in the same order as on the CD.
No Afro Celt material, but I did buy a copy of their latest (last?) CD OVA.
N'Faly and band very happy to sign stuff and chat.
Big shout to support band Echo Town. 2 brothers originally from Yorkshire now based in Cornwall. Multi-instrumentalist and vocals, drums and vocals. Would be even better for/at a standing gig or outdoor event

Went to see Stewart Lee's latest show tonight. Waited around afterwards to say hello, and he recognised me from previous meeting, so I asked him if he'd like to join me for a beer before he turned in. He said yes. We had a lovely chat about music and comedy. I managed to remain as calm as I could. What a joy. And what a lovely man.
