Saw Home Service on Tuesday night at Waterside Arts Centre in Sale. Poor turnout but a really good performance. It was my first time seeing them and it was quite emotional hearing these songs live, especially Snow Falls.

Pontardawe is a lovely venue. It varies between normal seats and tables, depending on the concert. I've been there several times.
That sounds promising. Many thanks replying. Jon Boden, Andy Fairweather-Lowe and Lindisfarne seem to be the highlights of the music that's coming up.

Seth Lakeman, backed by Benji Kirkpatrick and Alex Hart, at the Plough Arts centre in Great Torrington last night. It's only a small venue, but was packed out, which was good to see, and they'd opened up the side room and put out a bunch of extra seats at the front too. Seth & co were on good form, fresh from 4 shows at the Minack. We got a few from the new album, but other songs from throughout his career. He and Benji were constantly swapping around instruments, and Benji's electric playing added something I haven't really seen in Seth's shows before (I admit I haven't seen him that often - last time was Cropredy a couple of years ago). Two highlights though were when the others went off and we first got a totally acoustic Portrait Of My Wife, followed by him plugging in his fiddle again for a mesmerising Kitty Jay.

We saw them a few weeks back. Excellent, as you say. Seth seems finally to have grown into the reputation he's had for years. Benji and Alex are both excellent musicians in their own right, of course, well worth seeing on their tours.

The "new" Home Service last night in Otley. Bob fits in wonderfully, one or two blurry stage moments throughout, cracking night. Followed on from a Saturday matinee in Barnoldswick as the current Animals line-up recorded a live album. John Steele is an amazing drummer for an 84 year old!!!
I'm seeing the Home Service tonight in Sale. What were the 'blurry stage moments' ? When the tears just fall.....

Flook on their 30th anniversary tour in Kendal last night. They're one of these groups whose cds I don't listen to much but I always love seeing them in concert. They played all of their latest album Sanju along with a few from the previous one Ancora and old favourites like Granny's Attic which seemingly they've played at every gig they done.
All four of them as good as ever but Ed's guitar playing on the new album is particularly good. They were heading up to Glasgow to play at a festival this morning and the final date of their current tour is in Gateshead tomorrow. They then play various festivals over the summer.

Interesting, I was playing Ancora on the way to/from seeing John Kirkpatrick last night. I know Flook played at Cropredy one year, but I have no memory of it, and only discovered them some years later. JK was great - it was in a small narrow room, seating only about 50 people, and I can imagine that in some ways was probably like the experience of some of the early folk clubs in the 60s (with probably some of the same people in the audience too ). He must be the same sort of age as Ashley H and Martin Carthy, but shows no signs of age slowing him down - his voice is as strong as ever, as is his mastery of the various squeezy boxes. We got a good mixture of tunes and songs - original and traditional, as well as some surprising choices, finishing up with Leiber & Stoller's I’ve Got Them Feelin’ Too Good Today Blues from an obscure Peggy Lee album (blues singer complains because life is going too well for them!).

I saw John Kirkpatrick at Towersey a couple of years back. I think he sometimes performs with Benji and other members of his family. I was trying to remember if Benji joined him at the festival as he was playing with Seth Lakeman but checking my gigs list, Seth played there last year. At the Flook gig Brian mentioned a project Sarah had taken part in with Phil Cunningham and the opening track on Sanju titled The Farther Shore, she co-wrote with Phil. It's about those from SW Scotland and Northern Ireland who travelled across "the Narrow Sea" between the two countries to seek work. If you're interested, the resulting performance was filmed and is on iPlayer. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m0013xtc/the-narrow-sea-the-farther-shore-with-phil-cunningham

Tim Minchin.
This artist is totally new to me. I went with a friend who is a wheelchair user so I got in free.
I enjoyed the evening. The combination of humour/ anecdote and music isn't something i'm used to. I liked some of the songs and the band played very well. How 'big' is TM? Any fans on here?

Big fan. Saw him a couple of years ago at The Ipswich Regent and it was truly one of the best gigs I've ever been too. I think I first became aware of him when he did Jonathon Ross's Friday night BBC TV show (which gives you some idea of how long ago that was...) and did a bespoke number about Jane Goldman. Subsequently he even made musicals tolerable ("When I Grow Up" from Matilda was a particular showstopper when sung by an adult human male) and his series 'Upright' (Sky) was a must-watch at Kirk Towers. So, yes, I've heard of him.

Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks last night in Austin!
I haven’t seen him with a full rock band since the Union Tour, and I was mightily impressed. He retains the vocal range, charisma and energy of yore. The set list included several songs from their new album, which blend stylistically with the parade of 70s era Yes classics. His bass player and musical director is a charismatic player named Richie Castellano, who doubles as the full time bassist for Blue Oyster Cult. The show was great fun and Jon is an inspiration to aging rockers and mystics everywhere.

I'm entirely without interest in the current Yes, but this is a band I'd definitely like to see.

Ah, well there we go then. I know other people who don't have TVs. On one level, I admire them for it, but then you realise how it removes so many cultural reference points from the conversations. Jules

Jules Yes. The number of times ive had conversations with friends and acquaintances that go 'Did you see.... oh you haven't got a TV have you...' I don't mind. There's plenty of time for radio, books, records, visits to the cinema etc.
