KT Tunstall a couple of nights ago. She now has an all female band and they sounded good. A pleasant evening.
She'd be great at Cropredy!

Ooh yes, I think she would!  She was in Cardiff last night along with a few thousand pissed-up Welsh and Irish rugby fans. I hope her gig went well,  we'd have gone but already had tickets for a classical music concert at a local church.
I'm sure she had the time of her life!

Roy Harper  at Liverpool Phil this evening. Roy was fantastic- 'McGoohan's blues' in particular was amazing but I've never known such a badly behaved audience. There were 3 talkers on the row in front of me,and there were numerous drunken bellowers dotted around the audience who thought that we would rather hear their slurred interuptions than listen to Roy talking between songs. One of them even lit up a spliff during the last song. Spoiled what was otherwise a great night .<\Rant>

Last time I saw Roy at an outside festival he lit up a spliff on stage.

My school's speech days were held at the Phil. Could have done with a spliff at some of them. I once sat on the front row of the orchestra seats for an ISB concert there. Doesn't count as recent gig, I don't think, as I was about 17 at the time... nearly half a century ago. Gulp!!

Merchants, Peter.

Sadly, I was at the funeral of a St Mary's old boy yesterday - Peter Mullen - he was only 61 - cancer.

What a shame. He'd probably be a year below me, so I don't know him.

Roy Harper @ The Sage last night
A good gig marred only slightly by the usual hecklers (though he said liverpool was a lot worse). And he forgot the words to one of his new songs, for which I forgive him.

We forget that Roy gigs used to be all full of people rolling him spliffs, Roy rolling other people spliffs and interminable stoned waffle between crowd and artist.  Having said that they tended to be in sh1tty little venues and everyone was in a good mood.  I hate the gentrification and commercialisation of (folk-)rock'n'roll, and lots else besides...  Much as I love Roy, i'm not paying £50+ to see the guy.  I'm just not.  Glad the gig was good.  I saw the set list.  Nice.

I may have forgotten a lot, and not just because of the spliffs, but I've never forgotten the...uh...unique experience that is a Roy Harper gig.

My ticket for Liverpool was £25, which I thought was reasonable. It was my first Roy Harper gig and I wasn't aware of the reputation for hecklers at his shows - it was particularly bad in Liverpool, but it was mostly drunken, incoherent bellowing rather than heckling. I wouldn't have minded a bit of stoned waffle, and it didn't give the impression of a good mood.

Were they reduced at the end?  They were a lot more than that last time he toured, so maybe I just assumed?  Venues very far from full from what I hear.  P1ssed people at concerts are the pits.

No, I don't think so - it was virtually sold out. My ticket was at the back of the upper circle, so was the cheapest available though. I don't think they were as much as £50 for the good seats.

The sage was far from sold out and people like me who got the cheap balcony seats were offered a free 'upgrade' to downstairs which I refused as I like to look down on the stage

Half Man Half Biscuit at the Tramshed in Cardiff.  As tight and hilarious as a very tightly wound funny thing.  Great venue too - I'm next there for the slightly different Unthanks.  Who knew HMHB had a bit of a crazy old skinhead following, eh?  Weird.  What great songs....and much more muscular than the albums.

BANTER and the WILLOWS , 2 seperate gigs at the MUSICIAN Leics , this week, promoted by Andy Tuck, of this parish.
My usual thanks to Andy for regularly putting on acts of this calibre.
Banter , I have been watching since they formed and they just grow in stature . 3 consummate musicians, there aren’t enough trumpet/ trombone playing drummers in the world.! Their music is infectious and impossible to categorise. Original songs, trad english dance tunes , jazz , dub touches , an eclectic mix.
Energy and fun. One to see.
The Willows , I have loved for years , since seeing them at a fest 2011/12 ish!!! The present line up is really strong. Again consummate musicians, covering banjos , Guitars , dobro, fiddle and just stunning percussion. Great presentation, an audience that sang, it wa# fun and some of the playing of their own songs just built and built.
I bought the new album....a good sign.....!

If you listen to just one track, try their present single, False Light...it sums up what they do...
A classic festival band and I will see them again at Folk in a Field.

I found it on youtube and love it. I kept thinking the fiddler looked familiar until it finally struck me that it was Kat Gilmore. I looked up the band's website and the other name I recognize is Ben Savage. I'm planning to dig deeper into their material today.

I am desperate for The Willows to come and play in my part of the world. I took part in the crowd funding of the album, which incidentally has the most beautiful sleeve which I also have replicated ona T shirt. Fine band and substantially different stylistically from the various members' other acts.

New to me.  Had a listen to a few tracks.  I like them, but my mine reservation is with the lead vocal.  I much prefer Kat's voice, and I kept wishing that she was singing the songs....  Undecided
