I was just really disappointed to read them, but then quite a bit about RT (see tickets, price of) disappoints me these days...

I was at that concert where the (virtually unknown at the time) Pogues supported RT. Shane MacGowan was vile and his language was disgusting. At the end of their set he said they had to go because Richard Thompson was on next and he then said, “Whoever the f..k he is.” I was with a female friend of the family amongst others and I was angry and very embarrassed, and so were all the people around me. He was obnoxious and it was just unnecessary. Therefore I not only agree with RT if he has made critical comments about Shane, I applaud him.

Someone politely declines to play a tribute show to someone they didn’t really get on with, and you think that's edgy? Wait until you hear what Noel Gallagher thinks about his brother… That's not really what I said. Saying something someone says "has an edge" to it, and something is "edgy" have entirely different connotations. I still don't think it's a nice interview though...the polite thing to do would have been to stay schtum on the matter (don't speak ill of the dead - or of the mentally ill - is a fairly commonly head view) and not give them anything to write about. So, no, he wasn't being polite - and as I say I truly think that's the first comments I've read of RT speaking like that, hence the disappointment. |
