Twenty years ago my wife and I visited the place were she was born (Papua) in Indonesia.
We stayed with one of her nieces and when I was there I heard their Pop music and also some
of their Folk music, that is Moluccan and Papuan music. I immediately fell in love with both types
although their Pop music sounds rather sweet and melancholy.

The big hit then was a song by a Moluccan singer called Yopie Latul who sang a a song called
Poco Poco, the dance became popular there and Indonesian soldiers used it as an exercise and
later when it was shown on national tv it spread all over Indonesia.

In 2011 it also reached neighbouring country Malasia were many people also enjoyed it.
However a rather conservative mufti soon declared a fatwa and wanted to outlaw the dance
there. He said that the movements of this dance (an innocent line dance) had christian influences
because the dancers moved in the four directions (meaning the cross). Fortunately sanity prevailed
(like in 2008 when the same guy tried to ban yoga and also Muslim youths from wearing the jerseys
of Manchester United because the club's emblem contains a symbol of the devil). Oher religeous
leaders found the health benefits more important and gave the green light.

Here a clip of hundreds of people dancing the Poco Poco in Jakarta and enjoying it eventhough
some people think it is a dangerous and muslim belief eroding dance. Even the only girl who wears a head scarf
(who can be seen after a minute of four) is enjoying it very much.

Sorry if this has been up before, but it made me laugh. Only works if you don't know any German, of course.

When I visited my wife's family in West Papua they introduced me to Moluccan and Papuan music, I was hooked immediately.

Here a clip of one of the many Papuan vocal groups who play Folk music, usually with guitars, bass and ukulele (some of these are selfmade):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfLMNdsz-J8

There were several dances very popular at that time, one of them was called Wayase and eventhough the Papuan people who live in East Papua do not speak the same Papuan languages
as the people in West Papua and eventhough the lingua franca is different (Indonesian for West Papua and English for East Papua) this dance crossed the border to East Papua. Here a group of
young Papuans dancing the Wayase somewhere on Port Moresby:

Hattie Briggs was a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Musician I think a couple of years ago. I have been following her career, though sadly yet to see her live and hope that she gets the breaks to really go places.

See what you think.

I'm afraid I got rather obsessed as to whether that cello was really mic'd up or not.  Not sure what that proves.

Other than that...pleasant ditty, nice voice.... I guess at 2 o'clock on the little stage in some folk festival somewhere it would be very pleasant.

Penny Hop were a short lived, occasional English folk "big band" of the mid-1980s, featuring various members of Pyewackett and others. Musically, they were a combination of English ceilidh and New Orleans jazz.  They never released any official recordings, but here are a couple of long lost sessions from 1984!

The last couple of months I have been listening with great pleasure to two female groups from the Solomon Islands. I have found several video and audio clips of both of them on Youtube but trying to buy their albums is impossible, I tried Amazon Australia but they also do not stock their albums, they are probably only for sale locally. Further I could find only one article each about them on the net, that was all.

The group who has most video clips on Youtube is called Kopere, they consist of three girls and have made three albums, the last one was released last year. On the following clips only two of the girls take part, the third girl is probably someone who happened to be near when they shot the clip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDdiCfjsoJw

The other group who has been very popular in the region is called Sisiva, they  began in 2005. I found 4 video clips and several audio clips, what I find irressistable (of both groups) are the wonderful melodies and voices. Last couple of years they have not recorded anything probably because they all started families. The blond girl in the group (who I think is very pretty) is a natural blonde, it seems that about 10% of the population has blond hair which is cause by some gene.

A clip from a Thames television programme called Magpie from 1979, Folkrock band Mr Cosgill's Delight playing first a song called The foggy dew and then an instrumental.
In between the singer explains to the interviewer the difference between their music and that of Fairport and Steeleye.
