Off to Nettlebed again tonight. Phil Beer is a patron of the club, and is putting on a special evening at which he is playing, and bringing on some special guests including Hannah Martin, Kelly Oliver, Geoff Lakeman & Miranda Sykes. I don't know Kelly Oliver, but from the rest of the lineup it should be a good night.
Then I'll be seeing Steve Knightley there in a fortnight, and McGoldrick, McCusker and Doyle the week after that.

Imagine my surprise, nay shock, to see in last Saturday's Guardian's gig guide that The Residents are playing at a church in Wotton Under Edge (Glos) on Thursday. Listing even included a contact telephone number. To cut a long saga short, I checked this out, and they are indeed playing a gig at a church on Thursday - but it's in Brighton (and sold out...) B*gger!

It is a long time since I have been there. One of my oldest friends live there but when we meet up (which we will do hopefully soon) he usually comes to my part of the world rather than vice versa.

Tonight - James Taylor and His All-Star Band with special guest Bonnie Raitt!
Frank Erwin Center, Austin! (When are they going to retire this giant concrete monstrosity and relic of the 1970s? Soon, it turns out!)

Off to see an act I have never heard of tomorrow, Beans on Toast. To be honest it is the two excellent support acts that I want to see, Jess Morgan and Benjamin Folke Thomas. Just hope I enjoy the main act as well.

I think Beans On Toast supported Tankus The Henge at their album launch gig in November. Assuming I have got that right, I'm afraid I wasn't impressed. But Jess Morgan is great. Her song The Thompson Family Singers is one of the finest "folk" songs of the last decade imho.

If it is who I think it is, it is not even a band. Just a bloke singing sub Billy Bragg*/Frank Turner monotonous, potty mouthed rants. *I mean no disrespect to Billy here, of whom I am a great admirer. But he is what Mr On Toast seemed to aspire to whilst falling a very long way short, at least on the basis of that one performance.

Well, Bemjamin Folke Thomas and Jess Morgan both played brilliant sets. But, Beans on Toast were awful, a cross between Chas & Dave and Billy Bragg and I can't think of much worse than that.
