I think I've mentioned it somewhere else on here but I'm off up to Glasgow to see Songhoy Blues at the Queen Margaret Union tonight. Their latest album is a bit more varied that their debut with a guest appearance by Iggy Pop on one track.

I'd love to see Birds of Chicago who are playing in Glasgow next week with Salt House supporting but it's the day after we're seeing Jez Lowe in Morecambe. And we've got Lau playing in Lancaster on Feb the 16th so there's no lack of gigs round here in the coming weeks.

My favorite artists really upped their game over the last decade, giving me many more opportunities to see them in good venues with big crowds. I still remember the dark era of the 1990s, when 60s and 70s bands were playing military bases and amusement parks, a la Spinal Tap. (In that decade, I actually saw the Doobies at Seaworld, Six Flags, and Fort Hood.)

Scott Doonican tonight, now that payday is finally here, to celebrate my birthday earlier in the week; and I'm off to that London to see that Judy Dyble in a few weeks to celebrate hers.

He's brilliant. Enjoyable enough when with Boo Hewerdine, but best seen when he is on his own, I think.

Nice! Placed on "tentative" calendar. I'm ashamed to admit I haven't been to the Continental Club since I saw Ronnie Lane and the Austin version of "Slim Chance" there circa 1988. There were still hookers and drug dealers prowling South Congress Avenue back then; now it's wall-to-wall hipsters.  Smiley

Going to the Southbank Centre (or more specifically Queen Elizabeth Hall) on 12 February to see ‘Lost Words, Folk Music and Spell Songs’. This is new commission based on the book The Lost Words by Robert MacFarlane & Jackie Morris. It features Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Karine Polwart, Kris Drevet, Kerry Andrew, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux. Looking forward to this one.

Three gigs so far for this month

8 Feb - Jackie Oates at the Platform, Morecambe
16 Feb - Lau at the Grand Theatre, Lancaster
22 Feb - Megson at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal

And this caught my eye on the Brewery Arts website -

Cara Dillon – Pre-show Pizza Reception 26 April

Come and celebrate the captivating Irish singer Cara Dillon, meet like-minded audience members and enjoy a pizza buffet. 3 slices of pizza, fries and salad.

Is she doing this at any other venues or is just Kendal? Not exactly celebrating Cumbrian cuisine but maybe there'll be a Cumberland sausage and Morecambe Bay shrimp pizza with Kendal mint cake on the side. Or maybe not.  Grin
