He's not a young man anymore, these things are bad enough for us when we are young but at his age it takes ages to get right, we don't bounce now.😮
Best wishes to him for as speedy a recovery as possible

Watching the Art Detectives series and in the second episode one of the mysteries is about someone who ate eels. As soon as it was mentioned, I remembered the explanation of the tune A Surfeit Of Lampreys on Jewel In The Crown regarding Henry I. Ever since then the phrase stuck with me and then sure enough…the reference was brought up as one of the clues. Folk music….its where history is at!

What a great time yesterday evening spending time with old friends Ric Sanders,Vo Fletcher,John Etheridge and Nigel Kennedy at The Crooked Billet in Henley on Thames.Nigel and John were performing their third and final night at the venue.Stunning music of course from the trio. The excellent Alec Dankworth completing the trio on upright bass.

Sad news re: Richard

From Gate to Southwell Festival. We are writing to share some unfortunate news regarding Richard Thompson, Friday's headliner.  He has had a serious fall, resulting in three broken ribs. On doctor's orders, he is unable to perform and must take time to recover. We send Richard our heartfelt best wishes for a swift and full recovery.
We know this will be a huge disappointment to many of you – and we can assure you that we share that disappointment. We were incredibly excited to welcome him to our stage. Richard himself sends you a message: "I’m very sorry not to be able to perform at GTSF this year — I was truly looking forward to it. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope very much to make it to the festival in 2026 instead”

Did he fall, or was he pushed?

It can be tempting to try and make jokes based on a songwriter's lyrics or song titles but then this should have been "did he jump or was he pushed?"

I suppose it's like gallows humour. I remember being shocked at a friend telling pretty sick jokes after Freddie Mercury died and he was a big Queen fan. Maybe it was just his way of coping with the sad event.

But fortunately RT is still with us. So in this case it may be best to say, easy there, steady now and resist making comments about two left feet. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Oh, come on... There's a Richard Thompson song called Did She Jump or Was She Pushed.  You do know this, right?  It's a joke, ok (albeit a mildly inaccurate one!)....

Whenever Ric brought him on stage or talked about him at Cropredy, we used to go 'Hmm, Vo? What's that short for?' Any ideas?

A happy result...

So, as a result of this turnaround from King's Place, I've had a rush of blood to the head and booked a ticket. Anyone else coming ?
Anyone fancy a TAW meetup before and possibly after the show (this worked really well for Ashley's 80th Birthday concert in Birmingham back in April) ?

A really lovely little interview with Ric.  I've always loved his playing with the Softies and with the RULTS Albions..but have always been rather iffy about him in FC.  So it's interesting to have confirmed what I've always thought should have happened was what was planned to happen - Chris replacing Swarb in '85.

But 4 decades on, I'm just about ready to accept that (and mainly for the reasons outlined) they needed something very different (I've got the '92 recording to listen to when I need to feel I really was right).  Ric's a great bloke and a bloody great violinist (which doesn't mean I don't still struggle with a lot of the material over the last 40 years).  It's a great read.  Recommended.

https://darrensmusicblog.com/2025/06/26/interview-with-fairport-conventions-ric-sanders/

[ps still somewhat irritated by the once-again-repeated fact that there wasn't really a Fairport 1980-1985 - they were definitely very p/t but there were annual tours, and they even played in the US ffs]

It's an interesting interview, albeit covering ground that's been well covered before. The brutal honesty of describing bands as unknown quantitiesto Ric  because he has never heard of them or their music is refreshing. Also a pointer to the Cropredy '25 line-up.

I'm a pedant, I know, but I do wish that such articles could be proofread before publishing. It's no disservice to edit the interviews somewhat to avoid such errors as you refer to, David.

Interestingly, I thought that Ric's recruitment (as, effectively, 'second choice') hadn't been very well covered before - I've certainly not read it that clearly stated before.

The thing about the 'interregnum' comes directly from Ric, so, short of correcting the interviewee (which maybe wouldn't be a very good look), I'm not sure what they could do...
