Inspired by the American Epic series here is a new post about Blind Willie Johnson's fabulous Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground. Hey there is even a Fairport connection of sorts! In truth, I have become so enamored of this series that I am planning on making my own series of posts about the music from the boxset and documentary. It really is a treasure trove of American sounds. Reminds me of that line from The Blasters Song 'American Music'- 'We got the Louisiana Boogie and the Delta Blues, we got Country, Swing and Rockabilly Too. We got Jazz, Country Western and Chicago Blues, its the greatest music that you ever knew.

I have long been drawn to stories of adventure and the sea. Lord Franklin being no exception. Recently I read an excellent book by Michael Palin about Erebus. It inspired me to tell write a three part series, weaving in my own photos that are representative of the story, as well as some of the music inspired by Franklin's tale. Here is part one, featuring an instrumental track by Nightnoise. Part 2 should be completed for tomorrow. Climb on board!

Part 2 of my series about Lord Franklin is up. This one features the rescue attempts made, and features two songs-Martin Carthy’s version of Lord Franklin and a song known to all here-Mercy Bay by Fairport. Shares with your folkie/history/photographer pals appreciated!

Here is the conclusion of the Lord Franklin series, using Stan Rogers song Northwest Passage. This series started out in a purely historical vein, but in absorbing the words of Stan's song, it became something much more personal, relating to my life and what my frame of mind is these days. It can be found here. https://robpatdoy.wordpress.com/2019/02/27/seeking-lord-franklin-part-3/

After finishing the Lord Franklin series, I wasn't quite done...not with Franklin's story, but about my own. That is what this post is about, with a little song by Chris Trapper to go with it.

After reading about, thinking about, and writing about the Arctic and Lord Franklin for almost all of February, I thought a more inland pursuit was necessary. How about a trip to the woods, with a song by Dar Williams about precisely that subject!

Drawing inspiration from two sources-an old vintage camera I purchased awhile back together with the beautiful sounds of J.S. Ondara, here is a new post for you all-

After a few false starts, an unrelated bout of depression, and lack of time I can finally present the introduction and first part of my new New York punk series. Part 1 includes music by The Velvet Underground and New York Dolls. Hoping to have Part 2 finished within a week.

Well good people...I spent a lot of time recently thinking about a lot of things in my life. Soundtrack Of A Photograph being one of them. After nearly six years of posts, I feel it is the right time to set the concept aside as it has been. I have had some other creative ideas on the  back burner for awhile, and I think now is the time to explore them. So here's a short video message of me as well as a more detailed explanation.

I want to thank all of you for your support from day one. It has meant a great deal to me. I am not sad about this decision. It feels like a relief in many ways and after a little break to cull through the ideas, I hope to be back with some new creative outlets. So thanks once again TAW for all your individual and collective support. Slainte!

Thank you very much! Its taken awhile to get here after the separation and now official divorce, but there is a new found sense of calm in my life and a desire to be inspired again. I'm not joking when I say that on a blissful quiet morning walk in Donegal, with the ocean alongside me, and the only sound that of birds and sheep that I really evaluated where I am, and where I want to be. The blog gave me so much for so long. I've never devoted as much time to anything before other than photography. But this all started when I wanted my photography to be something more...to mean something more. And that is where the idea started. Six years is a good run and I have no sadness about this choice. I woke up this morning with a great sense of relief that along with a tribute page on FB for a group I ran (and have also stepped away from ) that what was fun and exciting basically stopped being so. It wasn't about taking a break, it was about deciding to be bold and heading to uncharted water once again. That IS exciting to me!

Even though I have moved on from the blog, I very much plan to hold on to the name SoundtrackPhoto...so much so that I have a new venture to announce! So here is my new photography website-https://soundtrackphoto.smugmug.com/

It is a hosted site, but the options and ease of use made it a great choice. I have not confirmed this yet but I believe, should anyone in the UK wish to own one of my photos, you can do so directly from the site. But hey, even if you just want to see some of my photos and we aren't connected on social media, you can now do so. I'll be loading up lots more gradually, but I wanted to start with some of the best initially. Now, where did I put my camera?  Wink
