Wasn't that the Brixton Academy shows where Cropper was absent (ill?) and Poncho played instead (but with the MGs)?

You could be right. My memory is perforated.

I saw him at Bury St Edmunds Apex. Shared the bill with The Animals, or what was left of them. A great night seated amongst a predominatey grey haired audience. A fine guitarist with a fine line in chat as well. He charmed my teenage daughter, sitting in the front row, after embarrasing her during his intro to Midnight Hour he came across and handed her a signed plectrum after the Green Onions encore. He probably had dozens of them but I think that we got the only one that night.

I went back to the memory well and recovered that I also saw Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Booker T. with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in 2002, and with Neil Young on his 1993 U.S. tour.

Neil Young did the world a service by keeping Steve Cropper out there for a couple of decades. Otherwise, he might never have left Nashville.

Raul Malo was an amazing singer, and The Mavericks were a great band, live and on record. As a solo artist and with the band, Raul played Austin regularly. Nevertheless, I saw them only once, last year at the Austin City Limits 50th Anniversary celebration concert. I think they played three songs. They were always on my list, but somehow I always found a reason to say "next year." R.I.P. and thanks for the beautiful music.

We saw Joe Ely a handful of times.

In 1999, we saw him guest with Los Lobos, and in 2000 Bruce Springsteen brought him out. Garrison Kiellor had him on live tapings of his radio show that we attended in 2006 and 2016. Finally, in 2022 we saw him inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. He was noticeably frail by then, and he retired from live performance shortly thereafter. He was a Texas legend, and I’m sorry I didn’t see him headline a show. RIP

I saw him once in a pub in Midhurst (billed as Blodwyn Pig) c.'83ish.  20-odd people watching.  Decent!

Chris Rea.

We had been on a very long round trip to get the Christmas groceries and were just singing THAT song on the way back…when we came in and saw that news…very sad!

But such a wonderful singer, songwriter and musician over and above that great track, too.

Sad to read the passing of Chris Rea. Upon hearing the news, my mind took me back to the only time I saw Chris perform. It was during the On the Beach tour, occupying the drum throne was Dave Mattacks and the keyboards, Max Middleton. This gig at Sheffield City Hall is certainly one of my gig highlights.

We were talking about Chris Rea only yesterday. We saw him about 10 years ago and he sang “that song” even though it was October (poss early November).

This is my favourite of his songs and possibly my favourite summer record. RIP Chris
