Guitarist and songwriter Rick Derringer, 77.

He was responsible for “Hang on Sloopy” (as founder and singer of the McCoys) and “Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo” (a hit for him and Johnny Winter, as well). He’s all over the Edgar Winter Group’s biggest LP, “They Only Come Out at Night.” And I just learned that he produced most of Weird Al Yankovic’s early albums. He was on my bucket list but I never got to see him. RIP

And he worked as Steely Dan side man - just listen to him on "Showbiz Kids". Rumour had that Becker & Fagin asked him to join the Dan, but he declined.
I also read that he became a loopy-lou "Religious Right" follower late in like and was an enthusiastic Trumphead. Sad.

I became aware of his conversion when I innocently visited his Facebook page for the first time a couple of years ago, seeking tour dates. He was unabashed. As I said recently re: Daltrey, there are advantages in not knowing the personal views of one’s favorite artists.

Jazz drummer Al Foster. Probably best known as a member of Miles Davis' band.
