My one and only gig at the long-since demolished venue The Dome in Morecambe was to see Melanie in 2008. Support was from a guitarist called Beau who I seem to remember joined Melanie during her set.

Awww sh***, one of my all time favourites. I loved the way her voice could move from timid child to mighty goddess in the space of a verse.
Favourites off the top of my head are Beautiful People, the Nickel Song, Do You Believe and Peace Will Come. She was so much more than Brand New Key....
And those beautiful eyes!! RIP

Melanie Safka, of Brand New Key fame, 76.
Oh no. I love Melanie. Was fortunate to see her live in the early 2000s. She was so great on stage. My one and only gig at the long-since demolished venue The Dome in Morecambe was to see Melanie in 2008. Support was from a guitarist called Beau who I seem to remember joined Melanie during her set. And I've just discovered that the gig was recorded and released in 2017 as a live album. Can't find it now but I recall a lovely interview where she recounted how she blagged her way to performing at Woodstock at 18 and went along with her mother. But they wouldn't let her mother in so she had to go through the whole experience alone (and the rest is history...)

She returned to the scene of the crime in 1998 to perform a full set at "A Day in the Garden Festival." Mrs. J From A and I were 20 miles away enjoying a leisurely breakfast instead of heading to the festival grounds as we should have done. Another in a long line of missed opportunities. R.I.P. Melanie. |

Melanie headlined the Monday night special arena concert they used to hold as part of the Sidmouth Festival. I remember it was a good natured, hippyish flavoured evening and was left happy at the end of the evening. She's rolling skating her way across the heavens now.

Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett aged 77. Wailers bassist. As a huge Marley fan and bass player this was the dude I listened to over and over to get to grips with mastering the reggae groove. I never had a chance of being anywhere near worthy to tie his bootlaces, but I thank him from the depths of my heart for the joy he has given to me. Rest easy bro', and see you on the other side.  |

Country superstar Toby Keith, aged 62, of stomach cancer.
I had to check the wayback machine, and indeed I saw Toby Keith once, performing the music of Waylon Jennings in 2015 at ACL Live, with Waylon's widow Jessi Colter and son Shooter plus a who's who of country superstars (Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Allison Krauss, etc.). Keith was an unapologetically controversial figure.
Country music is not my cup of tea, and neither are the redneck attitudes he espoused, but I wouldn't wish illness or pain on anyone. I'm sorry for his fans, family and friends. R.I.P.

I have just read Paul Brett has died, I don’t know if this has already been reported, he was in Elmer Gantry’s Velver Opera and was a great guitarist. I discover his music in the 90’s when I picked up one of his solo records interlife on vinyl. Sad news

Country singer/parodist Mojo Nixon, aged 66, died after performing on a music cruise yesterday.
He's best known in the states for the novelty song "Elvis is Everywhere," which I vaguely remember from early adulthood. Apparently, he built on this one "hit" to have quite a career. R.I.P.
