Sad news.. Nick Quarmby died on Sunday after a long battle with... you guessed it.. cancer.

I was sort of torn between John, George & Paul He died at 3am on 9 December 1980 UK time and that day turned out to be one of the most memorable and significant of my life. It was the first time I had experienced real grief even though I never knew the man. Today being a working day I shall have little time to mark the occasion. Tomorrow however will be a day of Lennon and Beatle music as it has been every year since 1980. |

No not Greg Lake what a shitty, shitty year. I was/am a massive ELP fan. Only yesterday I listened to their eponymous album, and had Tarkus planned for later today. RIP my old friend x thank you for making my early teenage years better. I've always said my only regret in life was not going to see Greg and his band the last time they visited Cardiff. That remains my only regret, slightly more bitter now. |

ELP once loomed large in my world. I outgrew much of it, but still went back sometimes to play various bits and pieces. When I started listening to them it was because of a keyboard obsession-Emerson, Jon Lord, Patrick Moraz, Rick Wakeman, etc. Whenever I go back though, I find myself more drawn to what Greg Lake did. A little guilty pleasure for me are the songs from Works, Volume 1. Completely slick, late 70's bombast. The type of thing you know brought on punk music for sure. Despite knowing that, I still love them. RIP Greg.

I was lucky enough to see what I believe was ELP's last ever show at High Voltage in 2010. Little did I know that, or that two of them would be gone six years later. RIP Greg Lake. Emerson, Lake and [Cozy] Powell booked into the Frank Erwin Center in Austin back in 1986, and I remember debating with my little brother whether to buy a ticket. The issue was whether I had "outgrown" ELP by the ripe old age of 22. IIRC, the show was cancelled for lack of interest before I had to make a decision (although according to setlist.com, they played several Texas cities on that tour). That was, to my knowledge, my one and only opportunity to see the great Greg Lake in live performance without traveling a vast distance. |
