Rico Rodriguez of The Specials passed away, aged 80
I'm not sure I could name another trombone player & he turned up in lots of odd places & his playing was always interesting. I can't remember who he played with when I saw him guesting, might have been Steel Pulse, but he stole the show.  "Certain Surprise" on John Martyn's One World (LP: Island ILPS 9492) - it's almost straight easy listening, a tinkling bossa-nova, with Harry Robinson's lush orchestration and one of the melee of visitors to Woolwich Hall Farm, Rico Rodriguez, playing an incredible sweet trombone solo. Martyn was delighted with his ability: "Rico walked in, played the one solo and walked out," he recalls. "I couldn't believe it. It was a difficult tune - semitones all over the place, a tricky little number - and then he walked in and did it in one. I love Rico. One of my favorite people in the world. A gentle man. Gary Richrath, original lead guitarist and co-songwriter of REO Speedwagon, died this weekend at age 65.
He wrote "Riding the Storm Out" and "Take it on the Run," two of their very best. He left (or was fired) in 1989 and pretty much disappeared from music. R.I.P.

Should have been in this thread Bryn Merrick - Barry lad and erstwhile bass player in The Damned. He was playing at the time they played on The Young Ones. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/damned-bassist-bryn-merrick-dies-10041318I've known Bryn for years - he played bass in Cardiff-based punk band Victimize and I used to watch them rehearse. In later years he was in a Ramones tribute act - The Shamones and he was always in various Barry pubs, having a laugh. He was a character and a proper punk, in that he lived it. He didn't wear a suit to work and then change for going out (like I did  ) Bryn had the bondage trousers, the spikey hair, the attitude. There's a strange back story here. Bryn was diagnosed with throat cancer at the same time as Paul Gray, the bassist he replaced in The Damned, in the same hospital by the same Doctor. RIP Bryn. |

Very sad to hear of Bryn Merrick's death. Saw him on three occasions with The Damned including one of their farewell shows at Brixton Academy and then once with Vanian and co in The Phantom Chords.

Such a shame. An underrated guitarist and (very) occasional songwriter ('Uncle Sam' from the 'Fog on the Tyne' album is a big favourite) - he wasn't at all interested in fame and all that went with it, but just ploughed his own furrow. Famous for never signing his own name when asked for an autograph - a true character and a real one off. He spent the last 25 years living in Canada, having moved there to start up his own microbrewery. RIP Si.
P.S - the annoying thing is if you try to google his name, guess who comes up?!

Oh I remember that song. Always sounded like he was singing "jus de mon père". I lived down the hall from an otherwise affable chap who used to love that song and play it regularly. I somehow forgave him.

Yes I have to admit that I was not terribly fond of that song either. If it helps Chris, he was previously in a band called, I think, Phd who also had a huge hit with I Won't Let You Down.
