I grew up with Val Doonican on the telly.  He always seemed very genial and warm-hearted.  Rest in peace.

Sad. I liked Val Doonican - a gentle soul, I always thought.  I used to love those "Delaney's Donkey" & "Paddy McGinty's Goat" songs.

(We were discussing only the other day how many more "legends" were still around to play the Sunday slot at next year's Glastonbury, and Val's name cropped up... although I believe he retired from performance some years ago).

RIP Mr Doonican.

He was certainly performing into his 80s. A man that everyone liked from all accounts and credited with 50 albums to his name!
A great life.

It may be a spoof but his Wikipedia entry states:

"A long-standing friend of the singer Sandy Denny, in 1970 Doonican was present at the recording of the Led Zeppelin track "The Battle of Evermore", contributing to the song's Gaelic-influenced backing harmonies". Allegedly from a 1971 RTE interview.

Can't find any corroborative evidence, but I really hope it's true.

There may be some truth to this. Val & Jimmy Page certainly knew each other as Jimmy had played on some of Val's records in the 60s.

Doonican was also a very good guitarist of course, though he favoured a finger picking acoustic or classical style rather than all out sonic assault!

That's sad. He was one if my dads favourites and I grew up with his music. He was probably an early influence on the music I ended up liking.

"Before Zeppelin, Page and Jones were session musicians, playing for Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Val Doonican and Herman's Hermits. Lulu was a favourite, however. Page performed on 'Shout', Jones on 'The Boat that I Row'" I'm not shocked now, but my younger self would have been, I'm sure.

Cosy cardy image  set to one side, Val was a great champion of late 60s early 70s American singer songwriters. I am sure I first heard Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Paxton songs on his show.

I remember the moustachioed genius that was Tom Paxton turning up my toes with his duets with Val singing novelty songs. Later I heard his more interesting stuff, but never quite lost the memory of cringing as my parents lapped it up.

I was teaching at a language school near Eastbourne in the late seventies when a German couple came into my class one morning. "We had a good evening last night at the theatre, David.  We saw Wol Donnegan." It took me a while to work out who it was but ever since he was always Wol Donnegan to me. A nice man RIP

A guitar playing friend of mine once said he was inspired to play by Val D. He was no slouch, apparently.

I remember seeing him as part of Hardin and York and also with the reformed Spencer Davis Group (without Steve Winwood of course) back in the mid 70s. He was an accomplished keyboard player who really should have been more well known. RIP

John Taylor, jazz pianist, suffered a fatal heart attack while performing at a festival in Sevre (France) earlier this month. He was 72.  Best known for his trio Azymuth, he recorded over 80 albums, and appeared on many other artists' albums (including David Sylvian). RIP

Buddy Emmons 1937 - 2015, great steel guitar player, probably most familiar around here for his contribution to "Crazy Lady Blues" on Sandy's "North Star Grassman" LP.
