"So saddened to hear of the death of Taylor Hawkins. If you want to play rock drums you're nothing without serious commitment. Taylor brought commitment in spades as he laid into that drum kit with  a huge smile, irrepressible energy and stratospheric levels of enthusiasm. These were all aspects of his personality and playing that I admired from afar and that brought so much pleasure to so many. It's a terrible loss of one so young with so much more to give. My sincere condolences to his wife, family and fellow Foo Fighters."  Bill Bruford.

What a heartfelt, thoughtful, and supportive tribute there from Bill.

Just saw that, Nick. Just 33 years old. Very sad indeed. My thoughts go to his wife and two children, his family and his bandmates.

I saw the Pointless Celebrities show which was on this weekend - he was on it with one of his bandmates and they won. It was interesting that they were playing for brain tumour charities. Not sure when it was recorded, probably last year.

Last autumn apparently, at which point he knew he was terminal. I thought it was extraordinarily brave but hearwarming to see him laughing and joking and clearly enjoying himself.

Joe Messina, one of the original guitarists for Motown Records' in-house backing band the Funk Brothers, died on Monday at the age of 93.

Born on Dec. 13, 1928, in Detroit, Messina began playing guitar as a child and dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a jazz musician. He gigged in local clubs and led a band, the Joe Messina Orchestra, before joining the house band for the daily children's television show The Soupy Sales Show, where he played alongside jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

In 1959, Motown founder Berry Gordy recruited Messina to join his stable of studio musicians to record at the label's Hitsville U.S.A. headquarters. Messina commanded a $10-per-hour rate, much higher than Gordy’s typical $5-per-song rate, and served as an official Funk Brother from 1959 through 1972.

Confirmed by his son Max. Also recently departed - Mira Calix, avant garde composer and musician. I believe she was only in her early 50s...

Just discovered her music recently via the Rosebud record and the preceding duo album with Jerry Yester, Farewell Aldebaran.

RIP Ric "RJ" Parnell, best known as ill-fated (weren't they all ?) drummer Mick Shrimpton in "This Is Spinal Tap".

Ric played with Spinal Tap up until their 1992 "Break Like The Wind" reunion album and tour. He also played with Atomic Rooster, The Deviants and was the drummer on the Toni Basil hit "Mickey".

His dad was Jack Parnell a drummer and bandleader who did loads of TV work in the 50's and 60's.
I saw Ric in a version of Atomic Rooster with Chris Farlowe, after Carl Palmer was long gone and he was terrific

Sad news at last nights FC gig about Ralphs brother.
Several mentioned in the new Mojo that I'd not heard about. Con Cluskey of The Bachelors, CW McCall, Harrison Birtwhistle (he of the much shown DM T shirt), Natty Wailer , Re Styles of The Tubes.
Also it appears that Peter Hammill and Mike Peters are quite poorly.

Peter tweeted that he was alright after an emergency op, but not sure if that's been superseded?  Mike's wife/partner didn't seem to imply that he was in any immediate danger although he is of course, quite poorly all of the time now, sadly.
