The world is not my home, I'm just passing through

Hi Guys,

So I had my banjo nicked tonight. I was walking home from a gig with a friend and we got to the point where we parted ways. We ended up standing around a finishing our conversation and there was a "dodgy" looking guy hanging round but we thought nothing of it, given that it was pub-closing time and we were on a street that's good for getting taxis. So we got to the actual goodbye, I put the banjo down, gave her a hug and then it was gone, as was the guy.

The banjo is very distinctive, it's a one of a kind tenor banjo built by Bob Thomson of Edinburgh. It's a large scale open back, with a transparent skin. Other distinguishable features are the vine leaf inlay in the neck and an abalone butterfly with the letters RMT above it inlaid into the headstock.

I will try and get some pictures tomorrow. I know it's a long shot posting this here but on the off chance that anyone sees or hears anything, please call Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 and mention it's in relation to incident number 212 on Saturday 31st July.

Thankyou.

Sorry to hear that Mike ... thieving little s**t should have his hands chopped off.  Undecided

It's a very long shot, but I hope you get it back (may be worth checking e-Bay, second hand shops, etc.)?

Are you on Facebook?  If so, it's well worth joining the 'Stolen Instrument Gallery' group - set up by folkies; people really do keep an eye out for things posted there.  If you're not on Facebook, maybe you could get someone else to post the details for you.

I do hope you get it back........

Have a look in the city 'Cash Converters' type shops and other music shops. The s**t won't know what he has his hands on and will probably sell it on ASAP. Also phone local music shops and let them know. Most of them will be very helpful.

In addition to the second hand shops, cash converters etc.It is well worth having a look around the area you were in.You may find once he realized what he had, he simply threw it into a hedge bottom or over a fence somewhere rather than risking being asked questions he didn't know the answers to when trying to sell it.
I know of several instances where cars have been broken into and expensive specialist instruments have been recovered several days later by dog walkers on waste ground for example.
It's worth a try (leaflets on lamposts etc)
Good luck GT

I take it you have reported this (and the loss of your bike) to the Police (for a crime number) and your insurers. Contents insurance usually has an element of "all-risks", to cover goods outside the home as well as in.

Mine, for instance, has been triple-checked that it covers cameras and lenses locked in my car boot on an August night in the middle of a field.

Even if you have no insurance, still ask at the local Cop Shop if anything has been handed in.

Reported to the cops. Crime number and local copshop phone are on the posters I've taken to all the local music and pawn shops.

My insurers have blustered their way out of covering it as I put it down and turned my back on it (albeit only for 20 seconds) so I wasn't taking due care.

They are technically correct there Mike. It's a bit like people leaving their keys in the car whilst they go and pay for petrol, and the car gets stolen. However, if you make enough noise and can show what you've done since to recover your property you may be able to get something. It's worth pestering them.

20 seconds isn't neglect of the banjo, it's neglect of the friend you embraced whilst the banjo was on the ground.

Argue.
