The Ballads of the Great War

The Ballad of the Great War - 1915, featuring stories told by men and women who took part in the conflict both at home and abroad. The stories are accompanied by original music written especially for the programme and was inspired by the stories told.

In this programme we hear about the Zeppelin air raids when, for the first time in modern warfare, towns and cities of mainland Britain were bombed, the disastrous Gallipoli campaign and we also hear the stories of two women who survived the attack on the ill fated liner Lusitania, sunk by a U-boat off Ireland in May 1915 with the loss of over 1000 passengers and crew.

The songs for this programme are performed by John Tams, Martin Carthy, Chris While, Julie Matthews, Jez Lowe, Barbara Dickson and Heidi Talbot.

This is episode 2 (seems a solo repeat, odd why this one in particular!) being repeated on
Wed 24 Oct 2018
21:00

and available on the iplayer shortly after broadcast

Last week's edition of my radio show Scattering The Roots has attained the heady position of No. 36 in the Mixcloud Blues Chart !

Wonderful news, and one mustn't grumble, however this has occurred on a week where the playlist doesn't actually feature any blues at all !

It does, however, feature folk, roots, etc...plenty of etc...from :

Oysterband, Neil Young, Eliza Carthy, Matthews Southern Comfort, The Finn Brothers, Teenage Fanclub, Jackson Browne, Elles Bailey, Dave Swarbrick, Trad Arrr., Fiddlers' Bid, Sugar, Tuck & Patti, Tom Petty, The Chair, Julian Dawson, Suzanne Vega, Ashley Hutchings (feat. and you can listen again (or, indeed for the first time) here :

I'll be presenting Scattering The Roots tonight, 10pm 'til Midnight : this week's edition celebrates the life and music of master multi-instrumentalist Maartin Allcock.

Featuring highlights of Maart's time with Fairport Convention, and also some prime cuts from his eclectic and prolific career including recordings with Robert Plant, Beverley Craven, WAZ, Blue Tapestry, Swarb's Lazarus, and his beautifully-crafted solo albums.

Nice show Dan. Good to hear some of Maart's later solo stuff as I don't have his last two albums.

But it is surely Carole King's You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman, given that is who Blue Tapestry were celebrating. Wink

Glad you enjoyed it - Blue Tapestry were such a good band that it would've been almost churlish not to include them as an example of Maart's versatility.
Saw them twice, including their barnstorming set at Cropredy 2003.
I'd love to have seen them do it again - alas, with both Maart and Pete Zorn gone, a true reunion is no longer possible.  Cry

Yes. I only ever saw them at Cropredy but they were terrific. They are part of my own Maart playlist too as are most of the other artists you played, with the addition of Cat Stevens, Beth Neilsen Chapman, The Bad Shepherds and Simon Nicol's solo work which Maart is all over.

The inclusion of Metal Matty reminded me how much I miss the extended medley ending to Matty. I don't know why they don't do that anymore. It doesn't need all the electronics (it was in place before Metal Matty) and always provided a musically spectacular end to the set. Now might be a good time to re-introduce some of Maart's instrumentals to the repertoire in tribute. After all they still play songs by Swarb, Sandy and Trevor.
